Shrink 2.3 introduces Layer Breaks ???

hi I'm carlos from spain

first of all my english level is not very good, so please forgive my english mistakes

I've used shrink in reauthor mode to make "el planeta del tesoro" (I suppose in english could be "the tresoure planet" one of the last movies from disney)


I've used reauthor mode, then I burned it , then I tested it in my stand-alone-dvd (pioneer-444)

I start "passing" chapters and in the majority of the chapters I get a pause like in the layer-break moment

Then I use ifoedit to see the ifo that shrink has made and it is full of layer breaks !!!! and aproximatelly the ifo has the double of chapters than the original one !!!!

what can the problem be ???

Is it a problem of the reauthor mode ????


I remember it had 2 Titles for the main movie, maybe I choosed the wrong one ? how can i know the right one???

It looks like you chose a version with extra stuff. Try the other title.

btw - they are not really layer breaks, but possible layer breaks. Ifoedit shows them this way to help choose a split point.

I had the same problem! After shrinking, I used IfoEdit to crate new IFO's. Problem went away. I noticed that ANY IFO that shrink created for me duplicated the layer break - and pause on playback - so now I just recreate the IFO's and don't have to worry.

This "layer break" has caused me some problems as well. I use the DVDShrink2.3 reauthor mode. My first movie I just burnt to disk. The weird part was that if I played the disc with PowerDVD the movie worked flawlessly, but if I used my SigmaDesigns X Card to play it...the movie started about 30 min into the movie and then played those first 30 min of the movie at the end.

Using IFOedit I examined what was going on at these chapter points and found the layer br. After recreating new IFO's(w/IFOedit) the layer br is removed and the movie works fine on the XCard. However, it adds the extra step of using IFO edit, and for me(because I don't want to waste disks, and I am not comfortable with the "creating new IFO's" always working) I make an ISO with Nero, and then mount with Daemon Tools 3.33 and play on the XCard just to be sure before burning.

I guess I don't fully understand why PowerDVD and the XCard take different actions for the layer break. DVD Shrink is great software though, I don't mind taking the extra 5mins in IFOedit. I do wonder if adding the layer br to the IFO by DVD Shrink is necessary or could be disabled or something. Like I said I don't fully understand it. ;)

If you use ifoedit to recreate new IFO's don't you end up losing the menus? One thing I like about DVDShrink is it gives me the option of keeping menus.

Yeah you probably do lose the menus. Didn't think about that. For me that situation never arises so I don't know. If I have to compress the movie at all I drop everything but the main title and English 6ch. The layer breaks only come in to play during compression in which case I have already gotten rid of the menus. 6 out of the last 7 movies I have done have required compression so I have very few with menus :(

But what can you expect trying to put a DVD-9 to one DVD-5... something has to be sacrificed...quality, menus, subtitles, extras, etc.
