Computer crash while converting

Hello,

I m trying to convert some avi files to mpeg with Tmpgenc, which normally works fine. But some of the files (the latest one used Divx mpeg-4-3 low motion and mpeg layer-3 as codecs) causes the pc to crash when being in Tmpgenc, Nero or VirtualDub.

The only difference I ve find about these files, is that Tmpgenc does not give a correct time length... a file of 50 minutes will fill the time scale of the program but VD or any player will shows the correct time length.

I tried running Divfix on these files, that didnt make any difference, the problem was still there.

The crashes are clean ones... the pc get turned off, no blue screen, no error message in the log, no message when rebooted, and no problem to reboot. But this pc with Window XP only crash in that specific situation.

Since I d really like to be able to watch these movies at last (and they re slowly adding up), any help would be welcome.

My computer shuts down whenever I use TMPGenc on it. Tried several versions using several types of files, tried different conversions, whenever i use this on my hp laptop it just shuts down. Is it a WinXP problem maybe?

I dont think it s a xp problem, I m using Tmpgenc often enough with success .... and a lot of other users too.

Could it be that your laptop is getting too hot ?

If so I wonder what i could do about it...

you could try putting it on four small boxes and having a fan running near it.... that would help keeping it cooler...

but it could be anything else too.... like memory for example, or too many processes running at the same time

I tried a fresh install of XP and only installed TMPGenC 2.513 and I shut off all the uneeded services, including fast user switching, themes, error reporting, effects and sounds etc...
So that isn't it. But maybe tonight I will try to put it on the boxes and sit it near my AC...

So, i find out a little bit more.... but not enough yet.

If i convert the avi file with virtual dub changing the audio to "no compression", Tmpgenc can convert that file to mpeg afterwards without crashing (just taking a bit more time than normally).

My question is then now : how can i avoid that first conversion ? am i missing something for Tmpgenc ?

I am having a similar problem to Lostspace although I’m not sure what your crash is like in that does the application crash and come up with an error message or does the entire system freeze up?
In my case the entire system freezes up beyond the help of ctrl + Alt + del and I have to turn my computer off and on again.

My hardware is:
AMD thunderbird XP 2200
512 MB RAM
300 W PSU

I am running windows XP professional

This problem occurs when using TMPG and also when I try to make a VCD in Nero and let Nero do the converting.
The crash occurs at a seemingly random point in the file and is different every time.
there is no error messages when the computer reboots eyther nor a blue screen. i dont normaly get crashes like this. other than when i run my webcam in yahoo instant messenger although i feel that is probably a seperat problem with yahoo bing shit.

I have found some bizarre things that seem to make a difference. One is if I am running the CD writing software or some other programs. Winamp doesn't help. Watching films doesn't help. However I have gotten good crash prevention from loading up Grand Theft Auto Vice City and just leaving a game running. However that has crashed once (when a file was accessed over my home network). So maybe there is a solution there.

I have tried checking my system temp and changing settings in the application nothing seems to point to a solution. I do other encoding from many different formats to DIVx and other formats. This is mainly a collection of my research into the problem. If someone finds a better solution or understands what is causing this please tell me.

I m not running it, so it can not be the reason for the crashes. As for my crashes, they are similar to yours, Amon.. just that I dont even have to turn the pc off.... it does it by itself.

Lostspace just a thought what power supply do you have? i'm wondering if it is my RAM or something else that is over heating as the heat protection on the CPU doesn't kick in. so it may be that the process drains your power and causes a reboot

Amon, I thought of that one too, but since I even crash straight after turning the pc and starting Tmpgenc , I doubt it..... it doesnt heat THAT fast.

you would be supprised if you run heat monitoring. but point well taken. i think its down to microsoft shared code somewhere. i'm wondering if you can get a new mpeg-1 codec. is it still called a codec for mpeg 1 encoding?
