loaded a dvd2avi 1.76 demuxed ac3 file into besweet gui and chose 6ch ogg preset from the list. resulting ogg file only had FL, FR, and LFE only???? any ideas on how to make it work?

Try use the CoreVorbis as DS Filter
or use The FooBar as App.
and try to listen your .ogg, trust me you gonna hear the right sound ;)
if still wrong try use OggMachine instead of BesweetGUI.

What does Winamp say?

i don't have the 5.1 ogg test plugin for winamp, so i can't tell how it sounds.
update:
using matroska container, was able to play back 5.1 ogg normally using corevorbis plugin. strange thing is, it won't play in core media player; stalls just before sound starts. it DOES, however, play in zoomplayer and media player classic. but, if i try to seek within the last 20 minutes of the movie (02:30:46 total length), it will freeze the player. if i wait long enough, it will start playing it again from the beginning. does the matroska container like files bigger than 2gig? any ideas why?
still can't play a 5.1 ogg file straight out either :P

here (http://webs.ono.com/dextstuff/5ch_test.ogg) you can find a correct mapped 5.1 ogg test fille. so you can be sure if its a en- or decoding problem.
btw: i create my 5.1 vorbis files with oggmachine, and there is no problem at all (decoding with corevorbis)
edit: thx to DeXT for hosting the file, its very useful

But, at least with CoreVorbis 1.0b5, this test file fails and doesn't map the LFE (at the end) to the LFE channel, when checking with matrix_mixer (0.30).
(...I think matrix_mixer plugin is right, because I have tested it previously with a standard test file "SurroundTest.AC3" and the mapping was correct. Plus, to rely on it, I have tested succesfully "SurroundTest.AC3" too with PowerDVD 5.0)
Instead, I have found that using with Besweet the option "-6ch 2" or "-6ch 3" give correct mapping (even though they are different!?).
So "-6ch 1" (or simply -6ch) jointly with CoreVorbis 1.0b5 doesn't give correct output...
what is the absolute correct one?

beware : the -6ch 1/2/3 isn't implemented yet.
current multichannel mapping is like stated in here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22970).

Oops, I have just red Q.13 in the FAQ and it says that -ota, -boost and -ssrc should not be used with ogg 6-channel mode.
So removing "-ota ( -d 119 )" from my cmd-line has resolved my channel mapping problem (now works perfectly with "-6ch" switch).
About Besweet Q.13 issue is it a general 6-ch bug or it matters only for Vorbis 5.1 encoding?
(I wonder if BSN + 5.1 AAC-HE has same issue)
Thanx!

BTW. Why BeSweet says that 6ch Vorbis file must be 48kHz ? I've created a 44.1kHz 6ch Vorbis file under Graph Edit and it work fine for me (of course bitrate is about 5% lower). Vorbis Encoder has no limitations for sampling rate, why BeSweet has?

what i have said in the BeSweet FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15738) is :currently '-6chogg' doesn't work with -ssrc( .. ), -boost( .. ), -ota( -g .. ).
