Should you enable Hard Disk SMART Monitoring?
I read somewhere that if enabled it may decrease system performance.

Yep in my experience always enable it. It does not seem to decrease performance and supposedly it allows the computer to better prevent the hdd from getting corrupted etc etc

I agree with this. Enable it! It will let you know if you´re Harddisks run properly! There´s no performance decrease...

I've actually had SMART warn me about a possible bad drive right before the drive started making a new, mechanical ticking and klunking noise. Seems to work. I've got it enabled, and get just shy of 100MB/Sec transfer speed, which is what my bus is capable of.

As far as I know, S.M.A.R.T. will alert you when your hard disk is probably going to die, so, it is a very good idea to enable it in the bios, that way, if you have important data you have not backed up, you can do it.

i leave it enabled, and run a s.m.a.r.t. app all the time. It tells me loads of stuff i don't understand, but i feel more secure with it running, knowing that if my hard drive's on the way out, it'll tell me (hopefully) long enough before it happens for me to order some new ones.

2 of my old iBMs supported S.M.A.R.T and died without giving me a warning (yes I had a utility running in windows ;) )

I think regular file back-ups + scan disk are better than this.

After my 80GB maxtor hd was ruined by some read/write errors,
and after i had succesfully rescued most of the data to a secondary hd, well after that the "smart monitoring" gave me a warning to backup my data and replace the disc...
bad luck i think :rolleyes:
