Divx on Pocket PC

Hi Guys!

I am playing with my new HP Ipaq 1915 with Windows CE 3.0 (2002). I downloaded a divxplayyer for my new device and I riped a movie on my SD card.

Everything worked well exept the playback, lots of artifacts while on my normal pc I'm having no problems. The processor is a Intel PXA255 200Mhz. Does anyone have an idea or tip how to rip a movie for pocket pc? Or is 200Mhz simply to slow?

Did you use DivX 5.0.>3 and the handheld profile when you encoded the movie?

There are a number of restrictions for encoding for a ppc, you may know them already but for further info try this forum

Edit: A General tip, don't use any advanced divx features like b-frames etc.

I always found MPEG1/2 to be better on my IPaq (one of the old StrongARM ones). MPEG4 simply takes too much CPU power. Since you resize everything down to 320x240 anyway the file size is still manageable provided you have a decent size memory card.

I agree. Since most DivX movies are encoded for non-handheld devices anyway (ie high bitrate, big frame size and use of extended features), better stick to MPEG1/2.

Hmm, I have to admit I haven't tried mpeg1/2 on my ppc but I find it hard to believe you'd get better results than mpeg4 at such low bitrates.

Fahruz, from what I understand whether you use mpeg1, 2 or 4 you'd be re/encoding specifically for the ppc with specific requirements so I don't see that there'd be any difference.

There is a big difference in my experience. I used to have P1 laptop. It didn't stand a chance doing MPEG4, but played MPEG2 quite happily. MPEG2 is designed for high bitrate & low CPU use while MPEG4 is lower bitrate & high CPU.

I forget the bitrates I used to use on my iPaq, but on my Zaurus (w/ a PXA255) I can only manage around 250kbps MPEG4 video (and remember that's with no b-frames, no resizing, etc since you have to transcode for these devices) without skipping while it can do 400+ kbps MPEG2 video.

I wish there was a codec that let you pick the compressibility (like rar or zip where you can pick highly compressed and slow or less compressed and fast). Or maybe some way to make an extra "cheat" file to help playback when you have spare i/o bandwidth...heck I would use that on my current laptop since I can't go full post processing on modern encodes anymore.
