audio distorted

I'm having a mysterious problem with captured avi files that I'm hoping that someone can help me with. I have a Fly Video 2000 card that I use to capture video, and a M-Audio Revolution card that I use for audio. I capture in VirtualDub.

The problem is that AVIs I captured last week (and seemed fine then as I recall) now play back with the audio at a blasting level with extreme distortion. For new AVIs that I capture, I have to turn down the input mixer to one click before the off position before the audio seems to be recorded without distortion.

Any idea what could change the gain of my recording/playback process so radically? Thanks,

maybe you have used the microphone-in instead of the line-in?

Nope. Line-in is the blue plug.

I just got a revo card, and I have my input gain on the second to last level to record without distortion. I was mad to find out that the gain had changed after I recorded some shows, and that my audio was too distorted to use after. So now I am checking the gain everytime just to make sure it stays that way. (It tends to stay sometimes, and change other times, must be some other program I am using that is changing it) I recommend the newest drivers for the revo card if you don't have them already, things seemed a little smoother with the newest ones for me. When I record at the right level, the audio is great though!
