I'm reading the CCE manual and came across something that I've never seen mentioned in the forums. It says:

"Cinema Craft Encoder SP reads an AVI file or QuickTime file and
converts it to an MPEG-2 file, but cannot convert the following files.
-AVI file the size of which exceeds 2GB."

I'm using CCE 2.5. Does this limitation apply to newer versions?

That's why most of us frameserve to CCE.

the 2gb AVI limitation is with VFW avis, DirectShow AVI's overcome the 2GB limitation.

CCE 2.62 and newer support DirectShow AVI's, thus overcoming the 2GB limitation, but CCE only supports vfw codecs (2.64 adds native DV support for files using fourcc DVSD)

Hello "Auenf"

Very interesting your explanation !

Though I am not exactly a newbie when it comes
to non-linear-video-editing & (re-)encoding,
could you please give an little more detailed
(but compact) explanation regarding the different types of avi's ?

Your help is much appreciated !!

the AVI format started off with a 1GB limit, Video For Windows (from win95 i think) extended that to 2GB, which was the maximum partition size anyway.

now that AVI is considered a great format for NLE (lots of capture drivers used to use hacks to get around the 2gb limit), microsoft has brought in the DirectShow specs to give an almost limitless file size.

VFW codec (vcm/acm) can still be used with the new AVI spec, and there is also newer DirectShow codecs.

Thanx !
And how can I, or anyone else, recognize the type of AVI,
in particular vwf or directshow ?
Depends it on the type of software and or OS used ?
