View Full Version : Just what can you put in the .Mp4 container?

I meant to ask this question some time ago but I think it has become more relevant now especially as there have been so many advances in the codec world recently.

Like most people on the forum I've only been able to experience an Mpeg4 video stream when it's within an .avi container - which I know has it's limitations.

I've experimented at work with QuickTime Pro and created a few .Mp4 clips for clients websites. But ofcource all the clips are 1pass CBR.

So, I guess what I would like to know is. What are you able to put into an .Mp4 container. And is anybody working on new players and encoding tools that will be coming our way any time soon?

Thanks

i think it would be better to "bump up" this interesting thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57668) instead of creating a new one with exactly the same post ;)

Yes, well thanks for that bond.

Maybe you could help me out with a bit more info as I know you are a keen AAC and AAC+ fan?

Do you agree that there should be me more AAC and AAC+ players and encoders using the .Mp4 container?

i dont see any advantage in using the .aac container/extension for audio
as this container is
- pretty old
- abandoned by every big manufacturer (sorenson, apple, partly by nero)
- i am not sure if it is spec compliant to put he-aac (aac+) into .aac files?
- and last but not least .aac files have more overhead/are bigger than .mp4 files with exactly the same input
- and .mp4 sounds great ;)

i only use two "sorts" of players -> winamp and directshow based players (bsplayer)

normal aac (in .mp4 or not) works great with the in_mp4 plugin

in directshow based players it isnt possible to playback .aac files as there is no aac parser available to my knowledge
playing back .mp4 files (with audio only or with video) is already perfectly possible with the 3ivx splitter (which makes it possible to playback .mp4 files on every directshow based player available)

Oh, I get it. I think!

Could this be the reason why nobody seems to have been able to create an .aac audio file that can be played back via the Sigma Xcard?

if you want to create spec compliant .aac files you can use Ivan & Menno (http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/ivan&menno.htm)!
if you have a .mp4 file that can be played back with the xcard, try converting this file with ivan&menno to .aac (one time with mpeg-2 header and one time with mpeg-4) and try playing back these files. if the xcard cant play back these files the chance is great that it doesnt support .aac!

Just as a sidenote, i am pretty sure there was a Vorbis patch announced for MPEG4IP once ... not sure if it actually found its way into official MPEG4IP code, but the guy doing this wanted to have the possibility to stream Vorbis with a UDP protocol from Apple Darwin server, and there are no Ogg UDP payloads existing as of yet ....
