filter order with NTSC material

I'm trying to understand when to operate on frames vs. fields. Someone please tell me if I've got this right. My source is NTSC (non-telecined).

Final product is deinterlaced .avi (probably divx):
1) Deinterlace
2) Denoise / smooth

Final product is mpeg-2 for DVD:
1) separate fields
2) Denoise / smooth fields separately
3) join fields

for AVI I would go this way:

1) separate fields
2) Denoise / smooth fields separately
3) join fields
4) Deinterlace

The denoiser before the deinterlacer will help deinterlacing.
