Netscape going away?

The end came when AOL decided to use IE. Netscape is already dead. All that's left is to make it formal. Mozilla is bloated and limping along.

Netscape navigator (v4.XX) is definitly dead. The code hasn't been changed in around 4 years. Mozilla on the other hand is far from dead even though aol agreed to dump mozilla for IE in a court settlement. The mozilla project will be continued (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/15/1736223&mode=thread&tid=126&tid=154&tid=95) though.

The mozilla project is not just to create the bowser, though in my opinion it is far better then IE, and I prefer it to opera. One of the main objectives of the project is to create XUL a highly flexable cross-platform widget toolkit.

I actually don't use mozilla, because it does not have the nice tab control that is in Firebird, and Galeon (linux), but never the less mozilla will continue. :cool:

for those at corporations..rolling at Mozilla is kinda hard "What is this dragon?", etc. Netscape Compact 7.1 to the rescue. I have it on about half the company's computers. That use IMAP with Netscape Mozilla. It's almost identical to Mozilla 1.4 but has a few tweaks.

the geko engine has always been superior. and if you think mozilla is too resouce-using, theres always firebird (once known as phoenix.) which is a cut down mozilla. which all you have to do is extract, theres no install whatsoever.

firebird is planned to replace the browser component of mozilla in the next release (1.5) cool, isn't it?:p
anyway, by now mozilla already has a great tab managing (i also use firebird & galeon)

Try using one of the recent nightly builds. I'm probaly getting some speed increase from compiling it myself, but in any case I've been impressed with the progress made latley. The GUI seems to have become more responsive since 1.4, and I'm not really seeing a difference anymore betwean Mozilla and Firebird in that respect.

Also, since the above refrenced article mentioned on Slashdot, Lindows has allready been anouced as a sponser for the Mozilla foundation. Now if they'll just start putting mng support back in...

actually, there's a thread about mng in mozillazine forums. someone has reduced it to about 150k (from about 300).. quite ot, but i don't think it's needed with more than 50k. it's just unused.

and, no, i don't think mozilla will die ANYtime soon.. just mho though. i'm gonna use it as long as i can. the last 1+ year with moz based have been quite refreshing, browsing wise ;)

I also doubt that Mozilla is dead. actually IMHO Mozilla and especially Firebird is getting stronger by the day. Personally I use Firebird/Phoenix for over half a year now and am very happy with it. the only thing i'm missing is a decent spellchecker :/

the only thing that i hate in mozilla is how it handles some mime types grrr :>

oh and how it tries to download some stuff rather then display them and vice versa.
