View Full Version : 2nd Pass Off?
Hello

I read a guide on 2nd pass encoding, and I set it all up like instructed. I took a video from a CD I had burned, copied the file to my desktop, opened it in VDub and extracted the first 15 minutes of it and saved it. Now, I took this file, selected No Audio, 2nd pass - 1st pass and it wrote me a video.stats file. I then selected the video (not the one made but the one I used so it's the right one) and chose 2nd pass - Int and chose 1400000 KBits as my desired size. I had all my options set up correctly according to the guide and one of those was 10000 Kilobits for max. bitrate. My file came out as 250 MB (no where near what i chose) and my bitrate was only 2.4 MBit. What did I do wrong?

Open your .stats file in Koepi's StatsReader (comes with XviD's installation) and it will tell you the maximum filesize it can reach for that video (which should be about 250 MB since that is what you got). In other words it can't make it any bigger, no matter what target size you set.
Do a search for "undersized" or "saturated" and you'll find lots of threads about this 'problem'.

I did mention it was a 15 minute clip, though I did specify 1.4GB. Anyway, in alt. cure options there is no way I can solve this? I want a bigger file so I can have top quality. Please help.

I opened the stats file with the stats reader and I don't see where it says "Max. Size". I see where it tells me how big it is I made it, but no limit. HELP!

In StatsReader from top to bottom you'll see these fields:
-Statsfile
-Version
-Size(MB)
The last one tells you the max possible size (not the current size!). Even if you took the entire video instead of just 15 mins it would still be very difficult to create a 1400 MB file out of it, because you are recompressing with a lossy codec.
I want a bigger file so I can have top quality. As you would have known if you did a search for the terms that I told you, you would now know that your video is at the highest possible quality the codec can make it for those settings. You seem to be under the impression that you can create detail out of thin air by trying to make a video larger, this is simply impossible.

So doing 1st pass CBR at 10000 Kbytes wouldn't yield such a bitrate? I read on my Xvid 2nd pass notepad help that the desired size should be set in the stats file, not VDub.
Also, my only stats reader says Stats Reader (2nd pass Ext) - I was doing it in 2nd pass - Int like everyone said to. What's the deal?
I changed it to my desired size, saved it as a new stats file, chose this one to be read, and I got a compression error doing 2nd pass - Ext.

Well now I made the desired size in VDub 2nd pass - Int the highest it could go (9.4 GB) and I got a bigger file and 3.0 MBit, which is an improvement.

Ok, this is weird. I made my stats file, and my desired size in 2nd Pass Int is 999999999 and now it doesn't proccess the video frames and crashes! It says access violation of Xvid. Whats wrong here?

It wasn't an error, but it took 2 minutes to begin processing for some reason. Anyway, I'm not sure why no one is answering, it's really discouraging. I just simply don't understand this - 999999999 desired KBytes gives me a smaller and lesser bitrate than a 9999994 KByte file. How can it be? And what is the ideal number to make the highest quality?

The reason I didn't answer is I'm in a different time zone and your last posts were in the middle of the night for me :).
I made my stats file, and my desired size in 2nd Pass Int is 999999999 and now it doesn't proccess the video frames and crashes! It says access violation of XvidApparently you just found the limit where XviD will overflow, that target filesize equals 952 TB ;).
Frankly I don't understand what you're doing anymore (and I think you don't either), so I suggest you take a guide (http://www.doom9.org/xvid-vdub-dev.htm) and follow it step by step.
As for what gives you the highest quality, use 1-pass quantizer mode and set it to a quantizer of 2, instead of using 2-pass mode or 1-pass CBR mode.

I read a guide - I figured it out now. 999999999KBytes is the limit, but for some odd reason, 9999994 KBytes puts out the highest bitrate and larger filesize.
Anyway, you mentioned this quantinizer - is this the way to get best quality? I'm using 2nd pass - int becasue I was told it was the best way for the best results. What is the way to go for top quality?

Best quality, don't care about filesize --> 1-pass quantizer 2
Best quality with restricted filesize --> 2-pass mode
Since you're suffering from undersized files here, the first one would be the best one for you (for this video anyway).

Thanks.

I just used 1st pass quantinizer 2 on a 7 minute clip and got a file size of 160 MB and a bitrate of 3.2 MBit while the 2nd pass - int gave me a file similar in size (maybe 163) and a bitrate a 3.4 MBit.

Aciala, I'm just wondering, are you sure? I mean, I'm doing 1st pas quantinizer 1 and it's giving me a WAY higher quality and size.

I just used 1st pass quantinizer 2 on a 7 minute clip and got a file size of 160 MB and a bitrate of 3.2 MBit while the 2nd pass - int gave me a file similar in size (maybe 163) and a bitrate a 3.4 MBit.So you found out that the file is already at maximum quality (at 160-163 MB) and can't be made any bigger (regardless of the target size you use), that's what I've been trying to explain to you all along.
I'm doing 1st pas quantinizer 1 and it's giving me a WAY higher quality and size.Yes you are correct, quantizer 1 gives a bigger size, but in fact it gives such huge sizes on normal sized videos that it is entirely impractical. For all intends and purposes quantizer 2 is the highest quality, quantizer 1 is just insane.
