I'm posting this because I don't think theres enough information about the speed boost for transcoders. Sorry if its out of place.
I just completed my upgrade from a P1.7 Williamette to a P2.6C. My transcoding speed jumped from 1.4 to 3.0! I use the setting the guide calls for for reducing DVD-9s to DVD-5s. So no resizing, just downsampling the M2V stream to ~4.2GB.
Here are my old vs new specs.
OLD (~1.4x, no filters)
----
P4 1.7 Williamette (400 FSB) w/ stock cooling.
Intel D850GBCAL
2x 256MB PC800 RDRAM
1x36G 10K & 2x9G 10K SCSIs
Windows XP SP1
CCE 2.50 w/AVISynth frameserving
Not overclocked (damn you intel mainboards!)
NEW (~3.0x, no filters)
----
P4 2.6C (800FSB) w/ HT enabled & stock cooling
Gigabyte 8KXNP i875 (non-ultra)
1x 512MB Crucial DDR400 CL3
1x36G 10K, 2x18G 10K, & 2x9G 10K SCSIs
Windows XP SP1
CCE 2.50 w/ AVISynth frameserving
Not overclocked [yet... : ) ]
I was pretty impressed when I saw the readings CCE was giving me. That was before I got my 2nd stick of Crucial DDR400 for dual channel and before I OC it to its normal 3.0GHz.
I should note my core temps went from 39C to 52C during the operation. Both CPUs were around 89% occupied but I could still do IM, etc with no appreciable stalling. Can't wait to get my raptors and my SLK-900u heatsink.
