Best thing is, this player is much cheaper compare to the others. It can be Region code-free with Macrovision-off, and you can get it around $139.99 in US. It also uses LTD-163 DVD, the same DVD-Drive PC uses. With my experience this drive will read almost anything, if the firmware support it, if it is broken, you can easily replace it. :)

Firmware Update Below.
Divx 3.11 Support

And FYI

1. press: open/close
2. press: 2
3. press: 9
4. press: 6
5. press: 0

now you are in a special-menu of this dvd-player.
take the cursor to "0" for code-free! and you can take the cursor to "Macrovision: Yes/No"

when you are ready, press: Open/Close or Enter!

Now enjoy your codefree liteon dvd-player !!!

Thes standalone players read avi containers right? Can they also handle any advanced features like an additional audio track and subtitles?

Second Audio track yes, but most (all?) can not play subtitles.

Mine (Bravo D1) handles a second audio track with no problem. It does not do subtitles (damn!). It does videos with 1 or 2 B-frames (I don't have any with 3 B-Frames). I haven't tested with GMC or Q-Pel, but it says not to use that. Mine doesn't play DivX 3.11, but handles DivX5 and XviD fine. It scales all resolutions well with correct AR. What other advanced features did you have in mind? I think they all have the same Sigma Designs chip, so far, so they should all support the same features, perhaps with firmware upgrades.

The Lite-On model sounds real good, though. I think they're the largest company to enter the market for DVD/MPEG4 players, even though they're just getting started in consumer electronics. So if anyone can put in the features we all want, they can.

The liteon has gotten really bad grades in the latest c't magazine) for its audio output because of a very high distortion factor (16%) plus a high luma-chroma delay.
