View Full Version : How to enable menus to work when backing up to XBox HDD ?

Hi guys. I've read through a million threads and I feel more confused than when I started.

I'd really appreciate some help - I'm brand new to this.

I only want to do one thing. I own a DVD (Animatrix). I want to copy it to my hard drive (XBox actually, but that should be irrelevant) and play it. With working menues. That's it.

I've gotten so far as to use vStrip to decrypt it and I can play individual 'VOB' files from the hard drive - some of the VOB files are menus, but they don't work (I can't press any of the links).

Should menues just work ? Is this not even possible? Am I meant to do something extra, or am I making this more complicated then I have to?

I'm not hardcore - I'm not too concerned about 100% perfect quality or anything, I just want it to work.

If someone could give me some simple instructions, including which software to use in each step, that would be just fantastic, as I'm totally lost at the moment.

Cheers,

snuf

Hello, and welcome to Doom9's forum. In all of your searches, you may have missed Doom9's HD Playback guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/hd-playback.htm). Click on it, if you haven't already read through it.

Next time, please pick a better title for your thread. Thanks!

99 views and only one reply pointing me to a manual which I have read and didn't help too much unfortunately.

C'mon guys - surely someone can at least tell me if it's possible or not, or point me in the right direction.

I'm sorry if I'm an idiot with this stuff, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Thanks,

snuf

pls snufkin,
I can hardly imagine that you are in a postition to demand for help. your 'problem' is rather rare and the purpose of the whole thing doesn't seem to be very clear.

now instead of thanking jggimi for his reply and his hint on the faux pas you've done, you go around ranting and asking for more.

so please change your title and see that a proper title will most likely help you to the solution for your problem. if you don't change the title i will and i'm sure you don't want this ;)

Hello snufkin, I would like to welcome you too to the forum.

Since u r using vstrip to decrypt it, its obvious that u r doing it in your pc and not on the xbox. DVD decrypter is an easier way to decrypt a dvd, if u ask me.

DVD structure contains more files than just vobs.
Vob files r just containers with video, audio and subs. What would be displayed in a monitor or tv is determined by using the ifo files that come along.

So u have to decrypt the whole VIDEO_TS folder in a folder with the same name and sent this over to xbox using your lan. I would assume that u have to put this folder in another one in xbox's hd and designate the later as start position. I don't own a xbox so I can?t tell about it.

All these info come naturally just by reading the decrypt guide that jggimi suggested as well as the dvd basics guide in the same location.

So I guess that u could have obtained this knowledge quite easily.

what steve suggested about your thread's title is still due. Not only u r violating forum rule 9, but u r discouraging other members from accessing it and give u valuable information about your problem.

oddyseus and killingspree,

I apologise for the subject of the thread - I didn't actually know I could change it once I has submitted the post but I now have.

The tone of my last post must've been differently understood to what I meant. I didn't mean to 'demand' anything or 'rant' - I just wanted some help. Again, I apologise.

For your information, I did actually thank jggimi for his kind reply - I PM'd him (and now reading rule 10 I probably shouldn't have done that either !!!) I'll get there eventually.

I'll try to clarify my question better having read the guides again, and post again in this thread if I'm still having dramas.

Cheers.....

snufkin:

Well, it appears as if you've learned a lot in the last three days.:) jggimi has shown you where the Guides are, killingspree has given you a gentle lesson on forum etiquette, and oddyseus has shown some of his expertise on DVD structure. You've now gotten some tools to work with, the only advice I could give you, is to conduct some tests, and report back on your results. Doing research and testing is one quick way to gain credibility and respect. Observing forum rules is another, and you're gaining ground there as well. Sending a thank-you pm to a Mod isn't against the rules, unless one of us should go into shock and need medical attention. Attitude is all, good luck!
