View Full Version : Fuji DVD+R's Quality?

Hi!
In the past I've purchased lots of Japanese made (read: Taiyo Yuden) Fuji CDR's. Recently, thinking that Fuji's DVD+R's are also Japanese made, I blindly purchased about 50 of them. Afterwards I noticed they were made in Taiwan.
Does anyone know if there should be any quality differences between TY Japanese made Fuji's and ones made in Taiwan? I define quality as primarily by *lifespan*, not compatibility.
We're using some for DVD video, but mostly for long-term archiving of family pictures and files.

Use ADVDINFO to see who actually made them and then get back to us. Without knowing who was the maker everything is just guess work.

Don't bother with DVD+R media... DVD+R playback ability is not as good as DVD-R media.
Here are the test:
Details of the compatibility tests concerning the DVD media formats -R/RW and +R/RW (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/DVDMediaFormats)

Hi Gil T Pleasure
What i meant was... If you have a DVD+R/RW, sell/get rid-off it on eBay ro charity org. Get a DVD-R/RW drive or dual format drive, because DVD+R paly back compatible is too low compare to DVD-R.

Hi Everyone,
I have a Sony 510 dual drive. I buy whichever's cheapests, though I give preference to + media based on what I've read.
I have Philips 720(?) DVD player that thankfully plays any media, any brand without fail.
So compatibility isn't as much a concern as quality and longevity is. I'm archiving movies and family photos (tonnes!!) that I don't want to lose.
I also tried that utility someone mentioned in this thread to identify the manufacturer, unfortunately it wouldn't work for me.

Sorry, FWMan, but I think I must disagree.
The CDRInfo article you cited did indeed conclude that DVD-R was more compatible, but I believe their testing method did not take something into consideration.
Most everyone who owns a DVD+R/+RW format drive knows that in order to maximize compatibility of the recorded media, you need to run the Bitsetter utility to cause the drive to flag DVD+R media as DVD-ROM. If you don't, the discs are flagged as DVD+R, which causes some playback devices to reject them outright as incompatible.
The CDRInfo article did not explicity state whether the Bitsetter utility was used on their HP DVD 300i drive or not, but I'm guessing that it wasn't.
To make a fair comparison between compatibility, they would have to rerun their tests after using the Bitsetter utility.
In my experience, DVD+R discs that I've made that are flagged as DVD-ROM are just as compatible as DVD-Rs. In fact, I have yet to find a player that will play one of the formats and not the other.

I prefer the +R format myself even though I have the Sony Dual drive.
I have had zero issues with any player I have ever tried them on, with no changes at all to the bits.
The only issue I have come across is with the +RW discs on one friends old Toshiba that doesn't even play VCD's.
The overall quality of the +R discs overtake any concern I have about playability in older DVD players since most newer players have no issues.
With -R discs you can almost never be sure of what you are getting in that package, while with the +R discs there are fewer manufacturers and those tend to be of a higher quality.
So far in retail I have only come across Ricoh discs that are top notch.
If you search a thread that if I am not mistaken Doom9 started some time ago he shows results of tests and comes to the conclusion that the +R format is superior.
This is the thread I mentioned above:
