I'm making a DVD and I need to reduce audio (AC-3) bitrate as low as possible. I need to know what's the lowest I can go and still be able to play it on many standalons DVD players. THis DVD will be destributed to thousands of people, so there is no way I can test it in advance on so many different players. I'm thinking of going as low as 56 KBits/s. Is this going to be acceptable ?

From Besweet:
32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256, 320, 384, 448, 512, 576, 640 KBits/s

Personally I wouldn't go below 160 2Ch

I guess you just got to experiment with different bitrates.

64k or higher

But why would you take less than 96k for Dolby Digital 1.0? the 32k difference won't have any visual video impact, but will improve audio quality greatly.

I found the hard way that Maestro won't accept an ac3 file if it was encoded below 192kbs (a 2.0 file actually). That is 96kbs per channel.

Thanks for the replies. I'll go for Dolby Digital 1.0 @ 96 kBs then.
One more question, what's the difference between Dolby Digital 1.0 and Dolby Digital 2.0 ? IS it mono and stereo ? How do I tell BeSweet to encode it to Dolby Digital 1.0 and not Dolby Digital 2.0 ?

Dolby 1.0 = mono
Dolby 2.0 = dual-mono or stereo or surround-pro-logic

The spec file clearly says that 32 kbps is possible. However, I don't know if there is any additional limit for dvd-video
