View Full Version : Trying to convert xvid/divx movies with ac3 sound

I am wanting to burn my very first DVD-R. Firstly I am trying to create a WAV file of the ac3 soundtrack using virtualdub (as the tutorials suggest) but when I try to do this I get the error that the soundtrack format is not supported or something. However, when I play the movie I do get sound as I have installed an ac3 codec already. I have tried installing an ac3 codec filter via Nimo and also the ac3filter ver 0.69b from ac3filter.sourceforge.net but still I get the error message when I try to save the wave file in the virtuadub file menu. Another strange thing is that GSpot tells me that I do not have a codec installed to play ac3 audio but I DO get sound when I play an ac3 movie in MS media player or bsplayer.

Can anyone help?

ps I will be using tmpgenc to encode the dvd files.

Welcome to forum earthworm.

Open the file in Nandub and immediately goto "File/Save wav"
Save file with a different file name. (eg sound.wav)

Rename file to sound.ac3

Use Besweet to transcode to a PCM wav
Use this wav in TMPGEnc.

PS
Since it's a DVD your tryin to create you could keep the AC3 and mux it with your video later on. Just a suggestion.

Would you suggest using nandub over virtual dub then? As I'm a newbie I'm still trying to decide on the best tools for the job.

I have been told that, when using virtualdub, the stripped wav file should similarly be renamed .ac3 and that itthen needs to be run through ac3fix.exe (a command line tool, in the tools section of virtualdub). Is this step not required when using nandub? And when I do have this .ac3 file how do I use it when burning the DVD? You are right, I would LOVE to get a dolby digital soundtrack on my burnt DVD. I have a dolby digital decoder linked to my stand alone DVD player you see :-)

Use NanDub or VirtualDubMod for sources containing AC3 or VBR MP3. I personally use VDubMod all the time ;)

I have never had to do that. So I guess it is not needed.

Use something like IFOEdit to create the dvd structure. It will allow you mux the mv2 and ac3 together, automatically creating the vobs. Burn to DVD-R (4.3Gb)

Good luck.
