View Full Version : bbMPEG process crashes my computer

I have read the FAQ and guide and hundreds of posts, and while my title may sound like the FAQ, it isn't as near as I can tell. I've spent many hours searching for an answer with no luck. When I backup a DVD with DVD2SVCD, a little after bbMPEG starts my computer will just shut down. There is no error message in the DVD2SVCD log, and no errors written to the Windows XP event log. I have Automatic Restart turned off, but am not getting a blue screen Stop Error, the system just shuts down, leaving the monitor with a blank off-white screen. DVD2SVCD Recovery results in shutdown again at the same point. The last logged command before the crash is:

Executing RunbbMPEG. Commandline:
"C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\bbMPEG\RunbbMPEG.exe" "H:\DVDTemp\bbMPEG_Muxed_File.mpg"

I previously made several backups without a problem, but this has happened on the last 2 DVDs I attempted, Bourne Identity and Dune. I actually reran both of those from scratch several times with the same result. I have uninstalled DVD2SVCD, and all other ripping/backup tools in case there was a conflict, then reinstalled just DVC2SVCD. I have defragged, ran chkdsk, ran memtest and torture test, and everything else I can think of (I do tech support for a living). Nothing new was installed during this time, and no hardware changes were made.

My workaround, and possibly a clue, is that if I boot to Safe Mode I can run DVD2SVCD Recovery and have it complete with no problems. So, my guess is a conflict with something running in the background, or a driver that is not loaded in Safe Mode. Troubleshooting from there is going to be time consuming.

System is AMD XP1700, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP Pro. The drive I am using is only a couple of months old. I am having no other problems with this system, which is about 6 months old and a sweet running system other than this. CPU temperature is good, around 55C (beSweet will raise it a few degrees, though). I'm not actively running any other programs when this happens.

Anyone have a clue on this?

I'm doing a backup on another DVD right now, will see in a few hours what happens with it.

Here is the log for Dune:

Hi BillJames310,

very good and detailed post - just the way we love them here. ;)

To your problem - hmm - you already tried all the things I would have adviced to you so it seems I'm at the end of my rope too and for you that possibly means you will have to go the extra mile and find out which program(s) and/or driver(s) do(es) interfere with bbMPEG in your case - I know it's a pain in the a..rm but ... wait.

Hey, I remember a program someone did mention a long time ago that could manage the priorities a bit better than the Windows Taskmanager and that made it posible with his machine to prevent CCE for example from crashing. I did a search but seems this posts have gone now duo to database pruning as they were very old indeed.

But perhaps playing around with the process priority setting in "Misc." tab can resolve this - I always use the "Idle" setting on my machine as I like to work with it while encoding and testing - never had any troubles with it.

HTH,
Gerti

Edit: P.S. As i didn't find the thread in here you can try to search Google for programs like "WinTasks Professional" (though I don't know if this was the program the guy used) - perhaps they have a working trial available for testing - see if this might help getting your machine more stable - in case of the guy I mentioned his problems were gone and some other testers that tried it confirmed it also cured their instable machines.

It seems it may just be certain DVDs that are causing this, since the one I let run overnight (Bloodwork) completed with no problems. If it doesn't happen too often perhaps I can live with it, but it drives me nuts to have something I can't figure out.

Thanks for your help, I will look for that program.
