View Full Version : GK -> Transcoding failure (detailed problem)
Bravo
12th July 2003, 12:04
Hello All :)
I recently spent about 5 - 6 hours going through GK guides, and learning how to encode quality rips. Previously i had used flask.
As of 2 weeks ago, i was running GK on a system, with everything set up according to the divx-digest guide. I did a format a little over a week ago, and have had problems using GK. The error the encoder spits out is:
ERROR: Will not recalculate bit rate! - Maybe you can add audio later
ERROR: MP3 file size is zero! Transcoding failed.
The only way i've been able to resolve this, is to set the mp3 bit rate from 64bit average, to 64bit constant. This has heavily bloated file sizes despite encoding with the same time, and visual bitrate settings.
Im hoping its something simple i've forgotten, i'd appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forum! I hope you'll find it useful.
Please copy and paste your complete _gknot.log file with the error in a reply. It may help us understand what procedural error or typo may have been made to cause the problem.
This is such a frequent request, we've even got a smiley for it: :logfile:

I can't tell why BeSweet is failing -- you might try running BeSweet manually (using the command string shown in the log) to pick up an error message. Both the Azid and Lame parameters you are using appear to be valid, to me. But I don't claim expertise. Perhaps someone else will see the problem.
But I did see other things that may be of interest. Of course, this is a very short clip you've chosen (45 frames?), but if you're using the same procedures for a complete encode: To avoid possible audio sync problems when using a bitrate below 128kbps, use --resample 48.
You are not selecting an estimated audio file size in the Audio A box, per the guide. This will impact estimated bitrate, which will impact Compressibility test results, should you elect to do them.
You are not conducting Compressibility tests; you may be unhappy with your results (under/over size, quality) without them. Hopefully, someone will see something in the log regarding BeSweet that I missed.

hi
as I just saw Josh (jggimi) was faster than me, but there's one more thing (unfortunately i couldn't detect a faulty audio setting either):
gknot only encoded 45 frames of the total 61000. so video encoding doesn't work either.
I don't want to sound pessmimistic, but this looks to me that you got some major problems with either your system or your gknot settings. perhaps you'll want to remove and reinstall everything. the best would be to dl the newest version of both gknot packs. and then install them after everything (including divx and all audio codecs) has been removed!
hope this helps

Can anybody point me to a guide i could follow to the letter? It seems I've have had no luck fixing this since i formatted :(

Just looking at the video encoding in this latest log, I see several odd things: During setup, the log shows:
Frames: 140938
That should be the number of frames in the DVD project file (.d2v). But the first pass shows:
3:25:15 AM: Finished DivX5-First Pass: Duration: 6 seconds.
3:25:15 AM: Trying to open Log-file.
3:25:15 AM: Success: Log-file open.
3:25:15 AM: Encoded: 197 Frames.
Which means that there is either a problem with the AviSynth script, or a problem with the codec.
To determine which; first ensure that DivX 5 is installed properly:
Run VdubMod (Start...Programs...Gordian Knot...Apps...VirtualDubMod)
See if DivX 5 is in the list of codecs available for compression, and which release it is. Bring up the list of available codecs:
Alt...Video...Compression
You should see DivX (Pro) 5.05 in the list of codecs.
Then, check to see if the AviSynth script Gknot created for you is operating properly. From VdubMod, open H:\DVD Rips\Village of the damned\Village of the damned.avs, and scroll through it. There should be 140938 frames in the file (Alt...File...Information), and you should be able to see frames at the beginning, and at the end.
The fact that you got 197 frames in the log means that you should be able to see something. Hopefully, more than 197 frames. If you only see 197 frames, please open the .avs file with a text editor, copy and paste it here, too.
I notices that the bitrate vs. resolution is still out-of-whack. The log shows:
Bitrate: 430 k(=1000)Bits/s
.
.
Quality: 0.076 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck3: 0.000 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck5: 0.000 bits/(pixel*frame).
Resolution: 640 x 352
This shows a relatively low bitrate, a b/p*f value way under "normal", no compressibility testing, and of course, a very high resolution.
Of course, compressibility testing requires a working encoder. Once you get Gknot working properly, I doubt you will like the results.I cannot tell why BeSweet is failing; these logs aren't showing the reason. As I recommended before, please run BeSweet (or BeSweetGUI) and attempt to encode the audio manually.
My guess is that installation did not go properly (again). Both the rip pack and the system pack must be installed. Gknot is a suite of tools; be sure you're using the latest from Doom9's download pages; the links in the guide may not be up to date.

I think a screenshot of bitrate tab of GK would help...
p.s. you can try transcoding audio manually via "add audio job only" on encoder window. In that case there will be a log file from besweet which can tell what excatly going wrong there (or may be that log is even always present...)
