Hi,

I am making a project: I want to add a new language track (czech language) from a PAL VHS to a NTSC DVD (Big Lebowski). I recorded the sound from the PAL VHS, then extracted the english audio from the DVD and I created a czech synch track in Cool Edit (streching, cutting, pasting etc. by comparing it in a multitrack session with the english original) It was nearly perfect, so I authored it in Maestro and burned it. But then I realised there was still some minor out-of-synch places (only like 0.2s shifted). So I started Cool Edit and made it perfect. Encoded the new wav to AC3 and authored it again.

BUT NOW BOTH tracks (english and czech) ARE OUT OF SYNC! I don't know why, because I made it exactly as before, only used the new czech ac3 file (exactly the same size as the old one which worked).

How I made it: DVD ripped with Decrypter, then demuxed to ac3 and m2v in vobedit. Then I used pulldown on the m2v:

Pulldown lebowski.m2v output.m2v –prog_frames p
(so that I can use chapter list from chapterexctractor)

and

Pulldown lebowski.m2v output-drop.m2v –prog_frames p –drop_frame true
(for the actual authoring)

I added english ac3 and czech ac3 and authored. Maestro showed that the lenght of the m2v is be different than the ac3s, but I new they were the same. So I authored and it worked - worked for the first the first time, but it does'nt work now.

I tried to add only the english ac3, still out of sync! It isnt working with the old czech ac3 neither.

Am I overlooking something?

Thanks in advance!

OK OK! Update. I don't know how the hell I haven't noticed it before! The old one is also out of sync! Exactly as the new one! But its strange. The movie is 116:58.944 long (I assume. The extracted ac3 is that long). Its perfectly in sync for cca 95 minutes and than suddenly it goes out of sync in only maybe 30 seconds and remains like that till the end of the movie (the delay between audio and video is cca. 1 second).

So here is the thing I need to know:

How would you backup "The Big Lebowski" NTSC DVD with:

1. DVD decrypter,
2. demuxing to ac3 (cca 320MB) and m2v (cca 3,700MB) and
3. authoring in DVDMaestro so that it will be in sync?

Only one audio track and one (widescreen) video track. No menus, no subtitles, no extra.

(sorry for my bad english)

Thank you in advance!

Yeah, OK. Problem solved. The pulldown action was not needed (even though the movie is in 24Fps). When I use the raw m2v from the decrypted VOBs, its working perfectly.

Well, so much for being a newbie.

Damn, I'm doing a nice monologue here!:p

OK. Know I need to inclde the menus somehow. This will be hard, because I have to demux, add the extra ac3 and author. Then I must bring it back to the original content but get rid off of the full screen version and the extras.

Can anybody help?

Hi,

you will have to demux your menu into pieces and get them back. I don´t know how much experienced you are in creating menus and how complex your menu is. There is good guide on doom9´s guide page for making menu in Maestro.

So briefly - demux all video/audio/subtitle streams. Edit your language selection menu, recreate all buttons and link them with proper assets (really annoying) and compile.

Another thing is it it is worth of effort to do this for one menu button thought you can select your language easily with remote control...

And yes - this is REALLY NICE MONOLOGUE :D :D.

First, you DO need to apply a 3:2 pulldown on the 24fps video. The reason that you could skip this step, is because the ripped video stream had the flags in place. If you would have encoded the video to a shorter length, then you would have needed to add the flags back.

About the audio (I couldn't tell if you solved your sync issue from your last post). I have had to sync up a single chapter before that was out of sync by about a second (but only that chapter). What I did, was convert the .AC3 to .WAV, then import it into CoolEdit2K, then add the required silence before this chapter, and removing the same silence at the end of this chapter. This was a royal pain in the ass, because I had to do this, then save (about 3 minutes for a 1.5Gbyte .WAV file), then check the sync using an .AVS script and VirtualDub, then adjust again and repeat. Once in sync, I reconverted back to .AC3 and continued, all fat and happy.

No, everithing is in sync now. I just have to include the menus somehow.I actually thought about doing something like in the "DVD9 to DVD5" in Maestro guide. To rip everithing and replace the main movie. But I have to get rid of the full screen version and the documentary (then it will have about 4,2GB). Maybe I could replace the main movie with the 40MB trailer (VTS_03_1.vob) somehow (and so the documentary). Anybody has done something like this before?
