I have a copy of the VP5 codec from On2. It encodes thru virtualdub or any other VFW app. It needs a dongle emulator. Anyone who can help please reply.

Sorry, posted without thinking. I won't do it again. When I had use of the codec I was very impressed with the results. Better than any other codec on the really hard stuff, I commpressed Nsyncs Pop video with it to 500kbps 30fps 320x240. I had no noticeable artifacts. The speed was about 15fps on the slowest speed search on a 850mhz thunderbird.

I use that video for codec tests because it has constant movement, highly contrasting colors and a lot of detail. I'll try RV9.

If you do try RV9, make sure to give the RV9 info thread a read (at least the first post). It gives a lot of useful info and info on how to use EHQ when encoding in RV9. EHQ allows for up to 30% improved compression efficiency over standard RV9. It's really usefull at lowbitrates.

is vp5 still smoothing a lot at higher bitrate (1kBit/s+), like vp3 does/did ?

do you have the dongle or did you just get a warez copy? I have some movies that would love to be encoded in vp5 ;)

I had the dongle because I was evaluating for the company I work for. At higher bitrates it behaves a lot like mpeg2. The picture gets sharper and can have more detail come thru after encoding. The only bad part is that it costs 10,000 for the encoder. Although Vp4 is supposed to come out for personal use in a few weeks, It should be interesting to see how it compares to xvid RV9 and a few others.

im not really impressed you don't see artifacts here. If it were 500kbit/d at 640x480 or more without visible artifacts that would be a different story :D i guess 'even' xvid is quite good at these settings - after all its 4 times less pixel that a full resolution...

I realize this is off topic but, what is a dongle emulator. I'm not interested in aquiring or using one. I have never heard the term before and I'm just curious.

Something to make the encoder think that the dongle is present. The other option would be to remove the actual check.

Sorry it was 400x300 not 320x240 Although xvid is about equal with vp5. Watching encoded stuff on tv really seems to point out some codec tricks. The things that look good on a computer screen can look really bad on tv, assuming you can output to tv appropriatly. On a pro video monitor you can see the chroma tricks being played with on divx video. Dark area's on computer screens are also more apparent on tv.

did you test it in a bitrate less than 350k or 225k?

or in another word, have you compared it with the RV9 in a lowbite(i mean something less than 350k,videosize should be at least in 320x240).

well, if you read my vp4 test (and I suppose me publishing rather bad results is the reason why on2 isn't even replying to my emails anymore), you'll understand that the prospect of getting vp4 for personal use does not particularly excite me.
