this is for your information:

I had burn 10 discs of each on these brand from meritline.com and shop4tech.com

Accu, Matrix, Prime, Beall, Piodata, Optical disc, Princo

and the drives had used on are:

Here is the result:

Pioneer 105 & 106 read as 4x burn at 4x through out the disc without any freezing and the master is 4.6 GB

Teac APAPI burn read as 4x burn at 2x but no freezing and the master is 4.6 GB

NEC 1300 don't read the disc

comment: very good deal compare with same quality media such as Princo, Prime, Accu, but reading ability take few second longer than higher end media with most of standalong dvd players.

5. Optical disc also known as shop4tech house brand from www.shop4tech.com 10 copy testing ( made by optical disc)

Pioneer 105 & 106 read as 4x burn at 4x through out the disc without any freezing and the master is 4.6 GB

Teac APAPI burn read as 4x burn 2x no freezing and the master is 4.6 GB

NEC 1300 read as 4x burn at 2x but has freezing problem and the master is 4.6 GB

Conclusion:

The point to all this is that at least with these types of "4x" media, you get what you pay for. You pay the extra for the Optodisks or the Beall or Ritek DVD-R's and you are going to get consistent burns @ 4x with all drives that is 4x formate. If you try and go with the Matrix, PRIMES OR ACCU's...you will get the occasional disk which will burn @4x on some drives, however, this is only my own testing with 10 disc of each brand. But the most importand is still depend on the drive itself because different user with different drive and I guess the reason of the above media all work great for Pioneer drive is because Pioneer owns most of market share and that is the reason why above medias work flawlessly but when it comes to other drive, you get what you pay for. On top of it, what is the different between generic brand media like above and know branded media like TDK, my comment to it is as long it works and who care which brand is it and as long I could save some money here and there on media that I know is most suitable for my drive instead waste my money on branded media that is going to cost double the price.

Thanks for the post and the testing. Good information.

When you say that a disc froze, is that during playback or burning? If it's during burning did you do any playback testing?

Thanks!

on both of playback and burnning, however, I had just found out a very interesting information on www.shop4tech.com "matrix 4x media" If you have a sony drive dru 500a or ax and using nero 5.5.10.35 or 5.5.10.42 which will burn Matrix disc at 4x without any problem and so is the playback ability is not bad at all!!

TDK Media (printed top) burns at 2X. Works in PS2, Panasonic player.

Panasonic media (printed top) burns at 1X. Works in PS2, Panasonic player.

Verbatim (white top) burns 2X, works in PS2, Panasonic player.

earlier, I had a post in regarding branded media. Here is my comment to it!! over 70% of storage media cdr, cdrw, dvd-/+r are all made in Taiwan. A lot of people had already been brain washed by branded product that their product is the best, indeed, their product is good, but do you know they are over 70% made in Taiwan. these generic media from www.meritline.com or www.shop4tech.com are from Taiwan or somewhere in Asia. Basicly, if you want to save money on media products, buy generic unless you are just another rich boy/girl who just don't care. now on my posting, I did memtion which generic is good and bad. I am not going to tell you to buy from which ever company, but I am just sharing with you on my testing and hoping you could make the right choice.

If you want to have good generic media and the price is better than branded and you are using media for your work professionally, then "Ritek, Optical Disc" is what you should buy only.

If you are no Professional user, save you some money to go have and buy "matrix or Princo"!!

jomo All I can say is you are a brave person. Buying from those places and using that media. Try a search on the online stores and read all the horror stories of them selling media as one brand when it was actually another and so on.

Those places and Princo media both have really poor Reps here.

I know from everything I have read in this forum that I will never buy from them or Princo media. Personally I would rather spend a few dollars more for a place I can trust and media I know to have a better reputation for quality.

I do appreciate the effort though, but I would like to see you retest the media in 6 months and see if they still work.

I do agree that most name brand media is relabeled generic media, but there is a difference in quality between the different companies that actually make the media.

markrb : I'd have to agree with you on princo. After buying a spindle of CD-R's a few years ago and discovering that the majority of them corrupted my data, i wouldn't touch a princo ever again. ever.

i've heard of the brandnames using generic media, but i have yet to find anyone who is able to say "Sony and xxx-generic's are the same, and Pioneer and yyy-generic's are the same".

jomo : your results are great... i dont want to take anything away from them. But you're overlooking two important checks:

1) Do any of the media's you've burned have defects, especially on the outside tracks of the discs, and
2) How do the discs playback in standalone DVD players.

This the info i'm looking for.... hopefully someone will post it someday. :)
