Dvd -> Xsvcd ?

Something that I'd really like to have (until I getmyself a DVD-burner :)) would be a program that transcodes DVD movies to fit on multiple CD-R's (XSVCD) instead of DVD-R's.. In theory it should be possible(?). Transcoding the video (720x576 PAL for example), reencoding the selected audiotrack to MPEG, and converting the subs to suitable format... Anyone know if there is such(or similar) program somewhere?

I believe what you want is called "DVD2SVCD" (the name kind of gives it away), so I'll move this thread there.

I am familiar with DVD2SVCD and as far as I know it uses TMPGENc or CCE for "re-encoding" not "transcoding". I'd like to avoid the recoding step and use the faster transcoding-way of "shrinking" a DVD to CD-R (XSVCD since I want to keep the 720x576 resolution aswell).

There is no problem creating a XSVCD with DVD2SVCD as everything is configurable from video size to bitrate, but you do need to re-encode the video with CCE or TMPG.
I know of no program that does exactly what you are looking for.

If you want to transcode to XSVCD then what you need to do is transcode with DVD2ONE using the custom option set to like 2 gig then demux with TMPEG and convert the AC3 audio to MP2 then simple re-mux with TMPEG with mpeg2 Program (VBR) settings then cut at 700meg segments then burn as non compliant SVCD in NERO, NERO will pad the 700meg to look like 79min so use 80min CD's. I've done it, looks very good.

Edit: I forgot to tell you that you should join the dvd2one vob's with vobmege then work with the one big file.

Ok. I get the DVD2ONE part.. But tmpgenc can't open VOB files, right? Or how do you mean?

What I do is to transcode the DVD to the size I want(700m x 2 or 700m x 3). I strip audio and subtitle streams I do not need. Then use DVD Shrink to split(better than dvdfab as you can split at virtually any point). And burn to 2 to 3 CDs. I end up with 2 or 3 miniDVDs. My standalone DVD player can play miniDVD. You can check yours at http://www.dvdrhelp.com . DVD to miniDVDs, IMHO, is much *faster* and nicer, than DVD to (X)SVCDs if your player supports miniDVD since minDVD keeps more features of DVD than (X)SVCD.

I use TMPGEnc Plus-2.511.51.160 which can open VOB's. Not sure what version it started at with this feature but it opens them no problem.

@bay - I wish my player would play mini-DVD's but can't :( Lucky Guy :)
