View Full Version : Windows Media 9 VCM support?

I was wondering if WM9 VCM support would be added to Gknot, it's already supported by pretty much any AVI encoder (VirtualDubMod picks it up right away), and it's a fantastic codec, as long as you plan on not using Linux (which I rarely use, and not at home). It supports many options that Xvid and Divx don't, and including the option really wouldn't take much effort ;)

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, hope you'll consider it!

Btw, if there already is a way to use WM9 VCM, say by editing the AVS file in some way, please let me know :)

That would be awesome :)

I've also been doing some testing with it, and even though it is painfully slow compared to other formats, I can really tell that it is a fine codec. There's less drop in detail than when using DivX, and it seems to be quite sparing on the bitrate, too. Wish I had a faster system :-P

Edit: after some more testing, I've become more and more impressed with it's level of quality at suprisingly low bitrates. I'm encoding at 800kbps and lower, and the worst artifacting I'm getting is some banding that's not noticeable at all on TVs. I'm encoding at about 80-90% of the full resolution of a DVD at widescreen aspect. I'll find out in a bit how well things hold together when I add in WMA9 in the interleave (wonder if I'll have to use Premiere, or if Nandub'll do it...), or try to put a VBR MP3 in, since I'm going to be using the .avi file container format. Good luck to me ;)

in my small test wmv9 had less details than rv9, divx and xvid at the same bitrate

Let me clarify what I mean by "detail." First off, I don't mean texture detail. For the most part, WM9 tends to have at least some banding at lower bitrates (below 800 or so), when at resolutions of say 512 X 320 (can't remember exactly, I deleted the file). This is a trait of texture loss due to compression. However, I also noted that a great deal of outline detail was preserved, especially evident in animation. Give it a few more tests, it has it's pros and cons. Think I may stick with DivX 5 for now, though.

I've heard that it doesn't store its settings in registry, making it almost impossible to implement in GK...

do you think you can take a look into this situation and see if its truly impossible to implement into GK? It would be great if it can be integrated as GK can help me determine the bitrate for my 2 pass WM9 encodings.

atm, it doesn't have any registry settings... so :(
