need advice on how to backup the big lebowski

I'm trying to make a backup of the Big Lebowski, but the way the files are set up it seems tricky. The disc has no special feature, the menu simply asks if you want to view the standard or widescreen version, I want to back up the widescreen version. VTS_01 has the standard version and VTS_04 has the widscreen version. My understanding is that you need VTS_01 on the disk for it to work right. The only way I can see of doing it (I'm a noob) is split VTS_01 so the first part is as small as possible and then putting that on a disk with VTS_04 and VIDEO_TS.

As a side note, there is also a VTS_02 which has 25 minutes of video and a VTS_03 which has 1.5 minutes of video. I'm guessing VTS_03 is the intro? Would I need this on the disk? I have no idea what VTS_02 could be since there are no special features (as far as I can see). Any ideas? Please be patient with me if these questions are stupid, I'm still learning.

I'm still learning like you, but I hope I'll be able to help you.
I think you should just rename VTS_04_*.VOBs to VTS_01 and create new IFO files with IFOEdit.Then paste subtitles' colours from the original VTS_04_0.IFO into your new VTS_01.0.IFO, otherwise you'll get green and fuzzy subtitles.Finally click on "Get VTS sectors".
To see what's contained in other VTSs open their VTS_*_0.IFO with IFOEdit and click on PGCs (on the lines with [Ch...][Pg...][Cell...])
or use VOBRator with VOB files.
If you want to keep only the movie without menus I suggest you to use DVDDecrypter, which allows you to select also which audio and subtitles streams you want to keep.

P.S:if the movie is completely contained in VTS_04 you won't need VTS_03 on your disc, unless it contains some menus you wanna keep

If you don't want both versions there's no need to get movie only, except if the containing files are higher than 4.37 gb. I think you can preserve the menus and extras in this movie because each version alone with complementary material doesn't pass the limits, so if you keep all files except the vts_01_1 to vts_01_4 (that you must delete) and then do a get vts sectors in IFOEDIT, you can get a perfectly playable DVD with the widescreen or the fullscreen version of the movie, i've done it succesfully with all the DVDs containing full and wide together!
