hi
i'm using this fine piece of software for more then a year now ...;-)
but since I have made a cpu ugrade, it doesn't start anymore...
problems seems to get worse above 3.4 GHZ...
when I lower the CPU clock to 3.3GHZ everything works fine...
anyone an explanation or solution..?
thnx in advance

Hi!
Welcome to the forum.
To get dvd2svcd work fine you should never tweak your cpu or ram.
Some of (or most of) programs that dvd2svcd uses put your pc to work much above normal usage. So even minor insability will make d2s to chrasch. So thats the explanation wy your pc would work fine at normal usage when tweaked, but will chrash with d2s.
I guess you have an 3,0 ghz cpu? If so you should be happy with getting d2s working fine at 3,3.
All this have been discussed many times earlier in the forum and it could be read in the reading you are supposed to read before posting a problem post. If you want to avoid getting fried by the moderators allways read guides and stickys an search the forum before posting.(just an advise)

tnx for the quick reply, but maby I should give you some extra details...
my system is rock stable even at 3.5 GHZ (with some extra noise..;( )
prime 95 ran for more than 24hours...;)
so it should be save at 3.4GHZ I think...
edit: my system was running stable for 8 month's with a P4/2.4@2.66...
never had any problems with dvd2svcd...
just replaced the cpu with a 3.06GHZ@3.4... the rest of the system stayed exactly the same...
I do a lot of video editing (AVI DV & conversions to svcd and DVD...
basicly using the same encoders tmpgenc/CCE basic...& avisynth...etc
ripping dvd2dvd with dvd2dvd-r....all those programs are working just fine at this CPU speed...
so if my cpu is set to 3.34GHZ (somewhere in between) I have to double click 2 to 3 times on the desktop-icon before the program starts...but then, if it does, it does the job to the end without any crashes..?
I know, I already have a solution...just lower my CPU speed..;-)
but just because many other programs are using the same encoders for video and audio that actually do work, I think the program itself cann't handle the high cpu clock....no offence
like I said before...I get very good results with DVD2SVCD, using it for:
dvd2svcd
avi2svcd
avi2dvd(divx), also AVI DV from canopus or DV cam to DVD
all with one soft package
anyway, kudo's to the maker of DVD2SVCD...

That is very stange that you have to click on the icon a bunch of times to get it to work. Have you tried to reinstall DVD2SVCD? I would try that if you havent. If that doesnt work then I would reccomend that you do a full format and install of windows again and see what happens with that. If that doesnt work then it sounds like you are screwed. :(

yes, already did that, with no results...
anyway,,don't think I'm screwed, because there's just a minor difference in performance between 3.3 and 3.4ghz...all together I can live with that, because @3.3ghz dvd2svcd has no problem at all..;)
this kind of errors reminds me when I had my 486/50mhz (yes, long time ago)...lots of programs would not run because of runtime errors...
I have the same feeling about this...

Ya sorry about that for some reason I forgot that you can go to 3.3Ghz. Well it could be something like runtime errors but for a positive answer DVD2SVCD himself would have to respond. Lets see what happens.

There seems to be an issue with HyperThreading CPU's and DVD2SVCD.
See if shutting it off in the bios helps.
Might want to try a search and see if any of the problems related to hyperthreading are like what you are having.
I would also suggest backing off the CPU to default and seeing if it works there.
Once you have solved your problem at default and then try slowly raising the speed.
DVD2SVCD is not Prime95 and there is noway to say that just because you are able to run Prime95 means you can run DVD2SVCD, although that is a good starting point for sure.

already disabled HT...> no results
I'm also aware, when using HT, you MUST reinstall windows after a format...
even then, I got the same problem...

did that to, because it's working fine @ 3.3GHZ..;-)

i don't fully agree with this argument, imho...it's different yes, but prime95 unsures me that the system is stable...and it is rock stable, believe me...
3.06ghz to 3.4ghz is just a moderate overclock, about 10 %...every intell can do that without problems or riscs, even with the boxed cooler...;-)
also don't forget like I said before, dvd2dvd-r is using almost the same programs like Lame, acid, avisynth, CCE or tmpgenc with no problems at all...
bottom line : the program itself just won't start at higher clocks then 3.4ghz..(on very rare occasion it does..?)
but most of the time I'm stuck with this given error :
dvd2svcd.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience...:D
but then again, if it does start up, it goes all the way to the end without problems or crashes..
makes you wonder what if, in the future when w'are running P4/3.6ghz(not OCed)...?
who knows, maybe it's just a minor bugg that didn't appear yet..

i don't fully agree with this argument,
They are very different. Does Prime95 do anything, but stress the CPU and Memory? The answer is no. If there are any issues with other components this will not always show up with a Prime95 stress test. Prime95 is good, don't get me wrong, but it is not 100% proof of a stable system.
It doesn't matter if your systems seems stable. Back it off just to be 100% sure. If it still errors at the default speed then you know that is not the issue, but some people (not directed at you) are so stubborn that they are unwilling to try a very simple thing just because they think they can't be wrong.
What is truly the harm of slowing the system down for a test?
Well if there is an issue when 3.6Ghz's CPU's are around for real and not overclocked then it will be dealt with. You cannot expect all programs to work with hardware that is being run faster then it's suppose to no matter what the percentage is. If DVD2SVCD works at the default speed of your system then you have nothing to complain about and there is no problem with the program.

Read what mrkrb wrote one more time and i think you to will understand that he means the defult speed of your cpu.
I cant see a good reason to make a fuzz about not getting d2s work at 3,4. It relly couldnt be that much speed diffrense in d2s with 3.3 or 3.4. Man its just 3% less cpu power.
Wy dont just set your cpu at 3,3 and be very happy that you allready have a really fast pc.
If you want d2s to work even faster my advise would be to get more ram instead risking to crasch your very expensive cpu.

I know, but that is not the issue here...
d2s is the only program that doesn't start at higher cpu speed...
once again, I already wrote there's no problem @3.3 ghz...so I can live with that...;)
so my question still remains "what is the default speed of dvd2svcd ? "
how many people have test it at higher cpu speeds...?

I really don't have an answer for you and I really doubt anyone will be able to tell you with any hard answers.
It seems to me that if DVD2SVCD works perfect at the default speed and not at anything faster then either it's a small system error that nothing else has a problem with or there are commands within DVD2SVCD that cannot work at that speed, which it is I cannot say and speculating any further does no good.
My advice is when you are going to use DVD2SVCD drop the speed and just deal with it. It's not worth the headache. If more people then just you have an issue it will become known, but since you are the only one that is having this issue right now I can only speculate the error is on your end and you are not the only person that overclocks in these forums.

how can you say the error is on my side...?
I think whe just have to see if anyone else have the same problem...
btw for the time beeing I'm running at 3.3ghz...np ;)
I have been using this program for over a year now on a p4/2.4 @ 2.7. also OC'd with no problems...
it isn't the issue of overclocking, but the max cpu clock...
anyway, it would be nice if there's anyone else out there who's running at same cpu cycles like me...
