Left-right jitter

I just finished creating a 3 disc backup of Starship Troopers which I recently purchased. The backup copy plays perfectly using WINDVD BUT it shows constant left-right jitters when playing on my Apex which has never had this problem with backup copies of other movies.

Any idea what's going on?

Did you enabled advanced options in D2S. If yes, you might have selected the Aspect ratio to 16:9 encoded as 16:9 with DAR flags. Check your log.

To be honest, I have used D2S so little I don't know where advanced options are nor do I know what the DAR flags indicate.

Its because of this right here. In the misc tab you selected advanced for the level of DVD2SVCD. Then in the Conversion tab you selected to encode (in the aspect ratio selection) anamorphic with no borders added. This is what made the picture shack. You will need to encode the video again, using 16:9 with the borders added, to fix this. If you dont have a widesceen TV this is what will happen when you select anamorphic.

But, I do have a 16:9 widescreen HDTV. I don't recall changing any of the specific parameters. Are you suggesting that if the source was 16:9, and I think it was, that I should NOT have selected something I did or that I should not have selected Advanced AND another option that caused the left-right constant jittering? This is the only movie of a dozen or so that I have backed up that has this problem. I MAY have inadvertently selected something though. IF I did could you specifically point it out?

If you dont have a widesceen TV this is what will happen when you select anamorphic.
Just to clarify this statement. This isn't entirely correct.
The fault lies in the DVD player not being able to properly read or handle the 16:9 video on an SVCD. Very few players can actually play these correctly.
I happen to use this setting since my final video will end up on a DVD, but players have no problems with the setting if you final destiantion is a DVD and not SVCD.

If you do have a widescreen TV and will only be watching the SVCD on a widescreen TV the best choice is to actually use 4:3 no borders encode as 4:3.

In the hobby of SVCD making almost nothing is certain. Alot of experminting is required for your setup to see what works and what doesnt. Even then it might only work on your setup and not a friends. What I would do to see whats going on is select 16:9 borders added in the conversion tab and then converty only 1 chapter, then burn that on an CD-RW and play it in your DVD player and see what happens. If it playes fine convert the whole movie again using that setting. If not try to convert one chapter using Anamorphic no borders and see what happens with that when you play it on your DVD player.

If you dont know how to do what I am saying then you should do some reading of the guides that are provided here for you. If I tell you how to do everything then you arent going to learn anything. :(

Guys, thanks for the feedback. As I previously said, I have backed up perhaps a dozen or so movies most of which were 16:9 (some were 2.35:1) and all worked perfectly. MAYBE, I inadvertently changed something but I don't think so. Assuming the APEX can play literally everything thrown at it which I believe it can is there anything that should be changed if the original DVD is 2.35:1 or if if is 16:9? In other words, what should the normal settings be in SVCD for a DVD that is 2.35 to 1 and what would they be for 16:9? I really don't remember if Starship Troopers was 2.35:1 or 16:9. Perhaps I noticed that it was 2.35:1 and I decided to fiddle with the settings. My TV, like most widescreen TVs, can zoom a 2:35:1 ratio to create an excellent image with very small borders top and bottom

I don't mind reading the FAQs and whatever is available. What didn't make sense is that ALL the previous movies, some of which were 2.35:1 worked perfectly with no jitter at all.

I have tried the ananmorphic setting on two different Apex units and both did not work.

As is in the FAQ it says that even the old standby Apex units do not work with this setting.

My guess is that you had the borders added in your previous encodes. Doing the encode this way works fine in all DVD players capable of SVCD play.

The only time you can even access the 16:9 no borders is if you set DVD2SVCD to the advanced level.

So my guess is that when you first did your encodes you did them as 16:9 add borders. Then sometime after that changed the DVD2SVCD setting to advanced and it set itself to 16:9 ananmorphic.

Anyway the FAQ has a really good explanation of the 3 choices. As it looks now you can't use 16:9 ananmorphic. Trust me that setting is far more hassle then it's worth. Best bet is to ignore it is even there.

My advice is if you are only going to play this on the widescreen TV do a test conversion or two using the 4:3 encode as 4:3 setting(even if the source is 16:9). Basically this tricks the DVD player into thinking it's a 4:3 image and it doesn't add borders, but it also does not have the 16:9 flag so it seems to work much better for most players.
