Having problems w/ audio, will my dvd player not play sound If I record in only DTS?

I'm using dvd shrink to strip out unwanted materials including sound. I noticed that on a couple of dvds I backed up that the sound wasn't there when I played them on my dvd player, but it is there when I play on my PC.

I believe I took out all the sound except DTS. Would that mean that I would need a digital decoder (DTS) through digital cables to play this on tv? Would it be better to choose 5.1 or 2 channel next time? Sorry, I'm not too familiar w/ this sound stuff. As always, thanks in advance.

In order to hear DTS audio your DVD player has to have DTS passthrough to your amp which has to be capable of decoding DTS. If this is not your situation then stick with Dolby 5.1. Even if you dont have a 5.1 decoder then it will be downsampled to digital stereo, but you will still have the 5.1 audio in case you ever upgrade your amp.
