I usually enabled B-frame and GMC. Most of the time, I disabled Q-Pel. But I really want to know about other people settings and thier opinions about it.

Please let me know your preferred settings.

I ALWAYS enable b-frames but that's it. I never use GMC/Q-Pel.

:sly: Best regards

I generally use b-frames, I use pve on credits and on some low bitrate encodes.

GMC and Qpel aren't recommended for general use.

Sorry, but this sort of annoys me. If you want to say something like this be prepared to back it up and give reasons why. Just saying something doesn't mean anything at all. I have found in my own tests that GMC doesn't do anything, it doesn't seem to help compressibility and sometimes even PSNR may decrease depending on what situation you use it in. As far as, quarterpixel I have found that there is huge PSNR increases usually when it is used, visually too the picture quality is much better, not nearly as blurry as opposed to if it is not used. Also, usually the compressibility is a little better, tested this with fixed quant. And as for b-frames, I would use them too in general as they help the compressibility a lot.

BoNz1,
Thanks for your informative post. I think the best way to evaluate these features is to test it scientifically. (e.g. measure PSNR, compare encoding speed, compressibility etc.)

B-frame is no doubt the feature that should be enable in most case. But I don't sure about GMC and Q-Pel. (I've read somewhere that there is a bug in DivX5 GMC and Q-Pels should not be used at the same time.)

If you're only ever interested in playing these back on a PC, then that approach works fine. For future hardware playback compatibility however, you will want to avoid GMC and Qpel, as these aren't supported in hardware playback devices. That may change in the future but probably not anytime soon. And cheap hardware players certainly won't be playing these back for some time to come . . . . the extra overhead required for decoding quarter pixels is simply too expensive for most hardware player manufacturers.

I mainly watch divx video on my XBOX using XBOX Media Player, it supports all divx pro features.

I like to play stuff on my laptop with low power consupmtion for airplane rides or whatever. This rules out GMC and and Qpel. B-frames are fine. All depends on your needs I guess.

i recommend using qpel because it leads to a much sharper image
(i dont own a standalone player but i think many player manufacturers will not be able to avoid implementing the pro-features as many people will request to be able to playback ALL divx movies on their players)
