How long do Princo last?

I know there are other threads on this, but I just wanted to get the latest opinions, since discs get older and older by day. Basically those Unbranded Maxell discs supermediastore was selling turned out to be DVD Pro, which I've heard are Princo. And I've discovered if I burn them at 1X they work, I've tried 3 of them. They lied about the brand so I should have figured they would have lied about the burning speed too. But I've heard that Princo sometime die after 3 months. My second question is, if a disc dies can you still read the data with DVDDecrypter for copy to a more quality disc? Or is the disc shot for all purposes. Thanks in advance.

They're shot. The ability to read them on a dvdrom goes first, because dvdroms have more CRC-checking than settops. So first, the DVDr won't be readable on your PC, even though it will read on your settop. Then, it will slowly not be readable on your settop. Many retain ability to be read by a settop for months, possibly over a year.

I'm on my second spindle of 100 princo's. I started burning from the first spindle 9 months ago. While I only use the remaining disks for small size backups due to their unreliability in my standalone, the 9 month old disks still read fine in my pc dvd-rom and burner.

I have personally never experienced a degradation of disks over a period of time. Either they work or they don't.

My oldest Princos are older then one year and are still readable in my settop. My dvd-rom doesn't like them too much though....:(

I stopped using them anyway, because of reliability problems. Especially on the outer rim they give lots of problems.

I would go with maybe somewaht more expensive but better quality discs.

Mine are two years, and I've had a decent amount of luck playing them on settops, only a handful have become totally useless. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way about laser-rot, and it wasn't in time enough to reimage them and burn them onto Riteks. :(
