I just finished backing up my copy of Matrix (the original) and thought I'd share my technique. It's probably not a new concept, but I don't recall seeing specific instructions for backing up this title, with the exception of the advanced guides that involve a lot more work and complexity than I was willing to expend.

- IC7
- CCE
- Maestro or Scenarist
- Ifoupdate
- and other utilities to process titles in CCE
1. Create a folder with all the original files.
2. Process disk (or files) with IC7. Reduce the main title to %64.3. Leave the menus and extras at 100%. Remove the 2 extra directors comments audio tracks (or you'll need to compress further). Make sure to include all subtitle streams.
3. Extract the PDI's to a temp folder.
4. Copy vts_02_0.ifo to a separate folder titled "authored"
5. Overwrite the original VTS_02_1.vob through VTS_02_4.vob files (from step 1) with the IC7 version.
5. Process VTS1 and VTS3 in CCE using the 'adjusted cell mode' technique as described in other Ifoupdate and CCE threads and guides. Encode at 1840 for VTS1 and 2000 for VTS3.
I put this in my AVS script:
telecide(guide=1,gthresh=30)
decimate(mode=3,threshold=2.0)
6. Author VTS 1 and 3 separately in Maestro (or together in Scenarist). Rename as necessary. Copy the authored vts_0x_0.ifo's to the author folder. Should have 3 total when done (including the IC7 authored ifo).
7. Overwrite the original VTS_03 and VTS_01 vobs with the maestro authored versions.
8. Run ifoupdate using adjusted cell mode. Make sure 'VTS_TMAPTI table transfer' is checked .
9. Optionally run menuedit to remove the menu options for the directors comments.
Done
I consider myself fairly fussy and the output from IC7 at 62 percent is close enough to the original to suit me. There are no obvious blocking or 'cube' artifacts. I carefully compared against the original and it's very close. There's no way to tell the difference on my 53inch big screen.
If you want to go all the way with IC7 alone, the extras in VTS1 and 3 will have to be around 42%. This causes strong and obvious compression blocks in the extras. Processing the extras with CCE results in much better looking output.
By doing it this way, I achieved decent looking results, and everything works including the white rabbit.
