Is there a "simple" method to rip a DVD movie to hard drive and then use a tool to delete some scenes? I know I can uncheck chapters when ripping, but don't want to delete a whole chapter. I want to take out a few mature scenes so my kids can watch a particular DVD. I have Pinnacle studio which could burn a DVD if I can get the video into an AVI file. I also have Nero and Sonic MyDVD, but I can't figure a way to do this using these programs. Thanks.

Hi-

You can rip by Vob ID or by Cell ID, which are smaller than chapters. Then you can go through and delete the ones you don't want. Sounds like a lot of work, though. You'll wind up with a lot of vob files (don't know how many exactly, as I've never done it that way). And DVD2AVI has a 99 vob max, so if worse comes to worst, you may have to rejoin some back together. You can go to the Settings of SmartRipper to set it to rip 1 of those 2 ways.

Thanks. I ripped a DVD, unchecking certain cells within a chapter in Smartripper. It created new VOB files and some files ending with .d2v, .1st, and .idx, and info.txt. I usually use file mode so I am unfamiliar with these types of files. How do you use these files to burn a new DVD+r with Nero? Thanks.

The files that end up with d2v is the prime source of a pseudo avi that u can create if u use the vfapi codec. U can find it in the download section in www.doom9.org

Run your d2v and u will get an avi file, a few meg in size. I bet that u can load this in to Pinnacle Studio along with the audio, cut the scenes u want and reencode to a new dvd.

Alternative u can load the video and audio in an authoring program and skip the offending parts by placing chapters at start and end of it and forcing a jump up on reaching them.

Hope that it helps a bit. I understand that u mustn't be very familiar with this.

Hi-

I understand that u mustn't be very familiar with this.

I think that applies to both of us. :) I thought he wanted to make a true .avi by way of AviSynth, and then convert that to DVD. Your way sounds much more elegant. Thanks!

Thanks, but I'm a little confused. You say "run your d2v file" - I'm assuming you mean with TMPGEnc, which I've never used but have read the guide. What is the vfapi codec and how do I use it? I have just downloaded it.

By the way, I was suggested a program called Chopper XP which allows for cutting scenes, but have had trouble getting it to load certain VOB files. I may try using the reauthor function in DVD Shrink.

vfapi codec is an alternative to avisynth in creating a pseudo avi file for frameserving purposes only.

U add the d2v project in it and hit run
