ok, heres the thing. most of the time, i can do flawless dvd rips - especially 2 disc ones... problem i have, is that every now and then, when i try and make a SINGLE disc rip, sometimes the video turns out all blury, and washed together... basically very very horrible.

other times though (when i do exactly the same process), i get crystal clear rips. anyone know why this is? i think its probably the quality of the dvd itself, but really, if the movie on the dvd is 4 gigs, the picture is not grainy or cruddy when im watching the movie off the dvd...

why is it so horrible when i encode it with divx (again, this only happens with SOME dvds, not all) - am i doing something wrong? anyone have this problem too, anyone know how to fix this problem? really, this problem, and my secondary subtitle problem, are the only things in my way to getting this whole process totally down.

Thanks for your time and any help.

The problem with answering a question like this is that in general it is hard to make generalizations about different movies ( ponder that one for a while ;) ) You probably aren't doing anything wrong. The mastering and quality of the DVD encode can affect your rips, as you know it is actually a transcode rather than an encode. Many other things, however, can change the compressibility of a movie, the length of the movie, the amount of high motion/low motion, and hundres of other subjective factors. Video is much less predictable than we think it would be intuitively. Do a search for compressibility or do a search for some of the hard to compress movie titles. Sometimes in my experience movies are just inexplicably hard or easy to compress. Another test to see how tough a movie is to compress would be to use GKnot for your encodes and its compressibility test, which should be very accurate in predicting the quality of an encode. Hope this makes sense and helps.
