View Full Version : Audio is only MONO from DBS

My family has a Direct TV satellite system. I just recently got a miniDV camcorder that has S-Video and that combined stereo audio and video input/output 3.5mm jack on the side of the camcorder.
I was tinkering with recording straight from the dbs receiver into my camcorder using S-Video for the video signal. The video is fine.

My problem is the audio... when I transfer the tape over to the computer via firewire and look at the audio signal waveform it's been recorded at stereo but only the left channel waveform (mono) is there. Other recordings (of the family pets) on the tape are full stereo waveforms. The mono tracks from the stuff recorded off the satellite even play mono out of my audio receiver hooked to the computer via S/PDIF.

I have to convert the stereo composite RCA audio cables coming from the dbs receiver to a stereo mini-jack plug so I can plug it into the camcorder with an adapter. I've tried many different combos, but it still is just mono!

Anyone else have this problem or have tried this?!
Help!

I just posted a similar question on just recording Directv's audio. Even though my resulting wave files sounded bad, they were still in stereo. I'd be interested if anyone finds a solution to your problem because it might solve mine too.

Steelo,
What type of cable(s) are you using to transfer the audio?

I'm using the optical cable that came bundled with my sound card. Any optical cable in theory should produce the same results.

Fixed my own problem.
I had been adapting to the cable coming out of the back of the entertainment center the dbs receiver sits inside of. Then it just occured to me... pull out the dbs receiver and directly connect the receiver to the camcorder. Well... I pulled it out and there my problem "sat looking at me". The (right channel) red composite cable's metal contact connector head had completely broken off of the cable!! The connector on the receiver was fine once pulled the broken cable part off. Fewwww... :)
Cheap cable I guess. :p I think it was a old one I used about 2 years ago I had just sitting around There's no telling how long it's been this way or how it happened because we've had the setup there for about 2 years and that was the last time I had to mess with the connections inside the entertainment center.

Anyway, replaced it with a better cable and presto! The dbs receiver output full stereo to the camcorder. The sound from the TV even sounds better now! :D
