I've searched for info on this and haven't found anything so, I thought I'd post this;

I wanted to see a custom icon when I inserted one of my burned dvd's and opened 'my computer'. Here's how I did it.

First, I found an icon I wanted to use (the more creative types can make their own) and placed it in a folder I named 'ICON'.

Next, using notepad, I created an 'Autorun.inf' file with the following lines:
[autorun]

ICON=ICON\Doc.ico

Finally, using Nero Burning Rom, I did a copy/paste of the 'ifo' and 'vob' files for my movie (Galaxy Quest in this case) to my 'new' dvd then copy/pasted the 'ICON' folder and 'Autorun.inf' file to the root of the drive ('new').

After burning, here's what it looks like:

Simple I know but I thought someone might be interested in this.

Does Stand Alone DVD accept (play) your "iconed" DVD, or did you test it only in PC DVD-ROM?

The movie plays fine in my stand alone dvd player as well. If you explore your commercial movie dvd's with your pc, you'll notice many movies have additional folders. These folders don't seem to affect the play on the dvd (my) player at all. I have a pioneer dv-500.

I do like to view my movies on my pc as well (19" samsung monitor, audigy sound card and 5.1 speakers + subwoofer). I also have two dvd drives...one play only and the other my burner (sony dru-500a)...I wanted a quick way to see which drive I inserted the dvd...and to add a little 'extra' personal touch.

Oh...and for you photoshop owners, here's a link to a site that offers a great 'donationware' plugin that allows you to load/create/save images in .ico format:
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/

An example of an icon I did using this plugin:
('Doc's Stuff') (http://www.glewis.net/misc/desk.gif)
As you can see, for Windows XP, you can have 32 bit (24 bit+8 bit alpha) icons with transparent background.
