On the market right now? Are there a few older drives that are at a really great pricepoint, or should I just get a new one?

That question is impossible to answer. But I'm sure that some people here will do that anyway and most of them will, for some strange reason, recommend the same drive as they just bought them selves ;)
Just remember that there doesn't have to be a connection between price and quality and that the same burners and burners made on the same components are sold under lots of different brands at different price-levels.
Old och new model? The fact is that some of the new multi-format burners are not more expensive than the older models. Nec1300 and LG 4040B does not cost much more than Pioneer 105 or NEC 1100 and they cost less than older models from some of the other brands. LG 4040B can burn plus- , minus- and dvd-ram-discs. Nec 1300 can burn plus- and minus-discs.
Don’t be too obsessed with the burners ripping/reading speed. It’s often cheaper and better to buy a less expensive burner and a separate, region free, fast DVD-Rom drive.
But you should definitely buy one!
