View Full Version : Very bad frames
Hey all.. i really have problems..
I tryed to encode The New Guy from DVD to XviD with Gordian Knot... And first of all, i'm just experimenting, so i don't even know if i have the right configuration.. Anyways, when i watch the new guy it gets blurry and the frames is very visible when the picture stands still, or when it gets really dark.. now, the bitrate was about 1055, audio on 128 kbps vbr mp3, 1 CDx700 mb... And i have no clue why it's so messed up.. But when the flick has action and it's bright, it's really good quality... i don't know what's wrong... it takes me about 6-10 Hours to encode an 700 Mb Cd... with like 7-10 FPS... i don't know.. i've been trying for like two weeks, and it's starting to drive me crazy....
If somebody could help me about this, and give me all the correct configuration about XviD 2 Pass Encoding, i would really appreciate it.. AND I MEAN ALL THE CORRECT CONFIGS!
Thanks to those that even bothers reading this crap..

Welcome to the forum. I hope you'll find it useful.
It is always possible that there is something procedurally that might cause trouble. If you would copy and paste your _Gknot.log file here, that might help point to something that isn't codec related.
In addition, try opening your .avs script in an AVI player (or VdubMod) to see if the problem isn't caused by an AviSynth filter. See if the scenes that trouble you happen to have the same trouble prior to encoding.
eheeh.. well, i didn't know that you needed the _gknot txt file, so i started encoding one more time with the settings that one of doom9's guides has... but when i were encoding that one, it all wa default settings, and on 1 st pass i used 2 pass - 1 pass, and on 2nd pass i used 2 pass - 2nd int.... but this is the new one.. probably that one will be the same... not much different in the settings.... check it out.. i'm not done yet with the movie, but all the settings are there, only that the 2nd pass isn't finished... Oh and by the way, i have the proggie on Swedish, so a few things, for ex. "07:25:37: Started Xvid - 1:a passet:" but it means 1:st pass :D

There are two possible problems that I can see in your _Gknot.log. They might be the cause your problem. I'm not the best at analyzing log files, other forum members may see things that I miss. Your audio size estimate is way off. Prior to transcoding, Audio A is estimated to be 278MB; after encoding, it is actually 73MB. Apparently you are using something other than 128kbps in the Audio A box, perhaps the actual size of the .ac3 file? If so, change back to 128kbps if that is the audio bitrate you will be using.
The obvious impact from this error: changing the video bitrate. Prior to audio encoding, the video bitrate is estimated to be 696kbps; after the correct audio size is determined, the video bitrate is 1027kbps. This may have impacted your compressibility tests, leading to false results. If so, then this may be the root cause of your trouble.
Your resolution is extremely large for a typical 1-CD MPEG-4 encoding of a 2 hour movie. You may have chosen this resolution due to a false compressibility check result, due to improper audio size estimation. If I read the log correctly, you're at 92% of maximum b/p*f, but your maximum b/p*f is low. There's a simple test to see if this was your problem. Correct your audio size estimation, then rerun a compressibilty test.
Oh, okay, well, thanks for telling me that, well i used the AC3 Size, 448 Kbps, but i just thought that it would re-calculate it correctly, but obviously i was wrong... could you tell me a good resolution and stuff like that?? like i said, i'm a newbie, so i don't really know this stuff....

Set your Audio A estimation to 128kbps if you plan on transcoding to 128kbps mp3.
Use Doom9's guide for recommended b/p*f values to set an initial resolution only.
Run a compressibility test, ignore b/p*f and use the % returned to pick your final resolution.Don't worry; you'll get the hang of it quickly. It often takes a little trial (and error) but the results are worth it.

I encoded the new guy(NTSC) to one cd with divx5
here are the stats of the final avi
Title: The.New.Guy.DVDRip-DivX5.avi
Duration: 01:28:35 (127,429 fr)
Video Codec: DivX 5.0
Resolution: 576x304 (1.895:1) [~15:8]
Video Bitrate: 978 kb/s
FPS: 23.976
Qf: 0.233 bits/pixel
Audio Codec: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Audio Bitrate: 119 kb/s (59/ch x 2 ch) VBR LAME3.93
Fs: 48000 Hz
I think the rip looks great, I should have went with the 640 by xxx res tho, but that is something I can always redo, since I have the dvd lying around somewhere :D
Well, thanks all of ya'll... i'm trying it right now,.. unfortuneatly, it takes me about 8 hours, and it's night now in Sweden, so, i'll just check it tommorrow and see if it's better.. Though, i think not... maybe it's my Computer... Could that actually take effect on the flick??
My system:
P!!! 800 EB MHz
384 MB SDRAM
GeForce 2 MX 32 MB
...................
I know it's shitty, but i'm just wondering... anyways, thanks to you to, for trying to help me, i'll let you know if it's still shitty...

Oh, and by the way, is it really meant to be that the first pass should take about 3-5 hours, and it's only making a 2988 Kbits File???
The second pass takes about 2,5-5 hours, but it's making a 600+ File??? I really don't understand? is it meant to be that VirtualDub should take about 10 Hours to encode? i know one dude that's encoding with some other proggy on like 2 hours... Not that i really care about the time.. it's just ticking me off that he's doing it faster, and i really like this program.. it has it all :D

with xvid I get like 5-10 fps, depending on how I setup the codec on the encode
with divx force film I pull 20 fps, 10 with IVTC
the first pass is just writting the log file, so yeah, it won't be a real avi.
Oh, okay man... thanks... allways wondered... hehe, so you mean that DivX is double as faster as XviD when it comes on encoding, but it's not as good quality?
/NeZ
Now the new encoding got finished... i did all you told me too, and i must edmit, i got a little better, but it's still very much frames showing on dark colors... or how u say... and also, the borders are a bit fuzzy on the flick too... i don't know why... i could give you a sample if you like, just toshow you where the and how it's getting bad.... but only if you want, and it's alloud on this site...

yeah, imo xvid blows away divx for quality, I am sure I could use some avisynth plugins to make it look almost as good with divx, but then I would be encoding at the 5-10 fps anyway ;)
I figure mpeg4 is not a standard yet, and I will probably have to redo my encodes some day anyway when it is a standard and my pc is a whole lot faster :D
my divx rips look pretty damn good at 1024x768 fullscreen on a 19" flat screen, so I am not complaining :)
Oh, okay dude....
But i still haven't got a respond on why it's so bad frames

remember, xvid has some unstable features in it, so it could be any of 1000 diff combinations of things. XviD-04102002-1 is the last stable released. with the newer xvids you got a combination of all kinds of things/new features.
I bet this post would get more help in the xvid forum.
so yes, I can't tell you why you get bad frames and I don't, only thing I can tell you is I used divx and you used xvid.
Okay dude, well, thanks for your help, see ya
