ok i tend to like windvd. at least the version 4.xx

BUT NOW windvd 5 has all this crap that is "nessesary" to run the program on your computer, at least it is on mine (windows 98se/win2k dual boot-i cant run xp cause of outdated soundcard)

Im supposed to install this one update msxml thingy.. but the crapping thing is like the hardest dll to activate. The average dummy on the web, im included in the top 10 % of the smartest of those dummies, would never be able to understand how to install this dumb program. I thought since i d.l. the trial from their site that the stupid prog would all be self contained, (i can understand needing the latest drivers for my hardware, as best i can do, and direct X. But all this extra xml shit is just rediculous, what does a dvd player need with xml anyway ( probably needs it just make an easier way to install it)

anyone that wants to help me out feel free to.. if you think im an idiot feel free to also, but at least say something like "you idiot, this is how to fix that..." not just "you idiot!"

at this time i rate this software at a 1 out of 10 since it cant really get a zero, (zero is non existance of anything) and a one only becuase the the older version carries it to the point of being real even though since i cant install this software to test, verification of its existance is not possible as of yet.

the thing with msxml 3.0 was very annoying...
but the WinDVD 4.5 has many, many bugs... e.g. it cannt play the WinOnCD "Music Album"(perhaps also Photoalbum correctly.

And the WinDVD 4.0 requires DirectX 8.1, this is also 100% unnecessary! All other players do not need it.

So try the PowerDVD 5.0!

This is sort of a tossup. I'm playing with a trial version of Windvd 5, and it does not have the crashing (iviaudio.ax exception) problem that windvd 3 had on win xp. However the user interface for v. 5 looks like a total kluge.

The thing I really don't like is the fact that windvd 5 gold cost $49 US. Let's face it - the only thing most of us use windvd for is to test ifo/vob files before burning. I'm not sure powerdvd has ever offered this.

Now for a surprise many people don't know about. I just got a freshly minted win xp home pc with WM9 installed on it. Using WM9, I opened up a VIDEO_TS.IFO file that was part of a rip/shrink folder. It plays the darn thing!!! Including the menu and all the actions associated with it. Even allowed me to enable a subtitle. I think I'll pass on windvd. If this capability of WM9 depends on a windvd codec, then I'm going to isolate these before my trial period ends.

if you had windvd installed it was using that codec in the background. The choices in XP are to buy your own codec to use with WMP or install a DVD player software and it will then use that codec in WMP.

Or you use latest Media Player Classic by Gabest which comes with an included MPEG-2 decoder (you'd just need AC3Filter as an additional program to play DVDs).

when you rip your DVD, U must use:
[DriveLetter]:\[ThePath\MovieName]\VIDEO_TS
And when you chose "Open DVD from HD" in WinDVD, you Browse to:
[DriveLetter]:\[ThePath\MovieName]\
and click OK...
This should work
