I know how to copy or clon a dvd disk to my dvd-r. But the question keep raising from my head:
why I cant just copy the *.vob & *.ifo file to the new disk? I know this question sound stupid and maybe be asked too many time. But I wanna know why is that cant work? I mean the reason behind the answer -- "No, you cant".
I dont know where can I find this answer for me. So I put my question here. Anyone can give me some tip about "why is the direct coping vob/ifo file wont work?"? Or maybe some link i can find out myself? :)

Well, first there's the encryption of the files, then macrovision. If the disc isn't encrypted and it's a DVD5 (less than 4.4gb), you do just what you want - copy up, copy down. But 99.9% of commerical dvds are encrypted and/or have macrovision.
That's why we need programs like IC7, DVD2ONE, etc.

The other big reason, is a DVD-R is 4,7 and pressed DVD Video are now 99% dual layer DVDs, so 9,4.
The best place to find the answer is in the guide section of this site. begin here :
http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm
I think I will wrtie this sentence in a txt file a do a cut & paste each time...
"Please do not forget Doom9 is not only a great forum, but also a huge library with tons of guides on all audio & video concerns. Check guides ! "

Depending on the type of movie you are into, I found that sometimes quite a few DVDs are still DVD-5 and don't have CSS (the use of which apparently costs licensing fees).
Quite a few ex-rental DVDs I bought for cheap are DVD-5 (the corresponding retail DVDs are often DVD-9, though)... most Hongkong DVDs are DVD-5 (and often still RC0) ... also they often don't use CSS. One reason to still use dvddecrypter in these cases is to remove the annoying user prohibitions (boring forced copyright notices, lengthy non-skippable dolby trailers & the like).

You mean if the files are deccsed and de-macrovisioned and can fit in dvd-r, then I can just creat a "VIDEO_TS" directry and write the *.vob and *.ifo(bup) etc to this dir use data mode, and this dvd-r video disk can be playbacke on dvd-player?
Are you sure?

No, that's not what I meant. If the original files/dvd are not encrypted or macrovisioned, you can just do a straight copy.
If you have to crack the encryption or remove the macrovision, the size and sector information about the disc is no longer correct and you'll have to use something like IfoEdit (or other tools) to correct it.
