I have a bunch of movies backed up with D2S all encoded 3:4 with borders added to view on 3:4 television. I have now purchased a 16:9 television, which I will get delivered on Wednesday. Since I cannot test this as of yet, I was wondering what will the backups display on the 16;9 screen? I know to change my DVD player options to 16:9, but that won't change the output of the SVCD to something it wasn't encoded at, will it? I just hope I do not have to go back and do the backups all over to Anamorphic. Someone I am sure has been here before.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm guessing that it will add black borders to the left and right of the image and still display it as 4:3. I think the borders are "hardcoded" (dont really know if thats the proper word for it) into the movie. Where as if you were to use the anamorphic setting in DVD2SVCD, (I don't think all DVD players support anamorphic SVCD's) then it would display a proper 16:9 SVCD.
But as I said, I'm not 100%. So I'd wait for someone who knows for sure to respond.

That is what I thouht it would look like. I know the Hitachi has a Zoom mode that will probably remove the bars but I would guess it will also crop the sides a bit as it does it. Kind of like it does the top and bottom of regular TV broadcast. I will use Anamorphic from now on. I guess I didn't plan well enough for the future, heheheh

Hi-
On my Samsung 16:9, in Normal mode, it's as Forseti said, with "pillared" bars (bars on the left and right sides). But the TV has a number of zoom modes, and with Zoom1 it upscales it to fill the screen left and right (with the usual TV overscan that you mentioned), and with good AR. But speaking of the overscan, I use FitCD to add black bars to the left and right so that I get to see almost all of the picture. I think that all 16:9 TVs have this, and you won't have any trouble viewing your SVCDs nice and big. On my Samsung it's the "Aspect" button on the remote. On my brother-in-law's Hitachi it's the "Format" button on his remote. Now, if it's a true 1.33:1 movie, then you want to keep it with bars on left and right. But if it's widescreen, then it fills the screen pretty well in Zoom1 Mode, depending if it's a 1.85:1 movie (completely fills the screen), or a 2.35:1 movie (small bars on top and bottom). But you'll have fun playing with it, as I did.

On my tv (philips widescreen) i have a button on the remote the get rid of the black borders. Works perfect !!!! Even with 4:3 encoded vcd's. I just set it to widescreen 16:9 and the picture perfectly fits !!!! So i shouldn't be to worried. :)
