SVCD resolution?

Hello!
I'm a newbie of VCD/SVCD and I've a question.
I found that SVCD has a fixed resolution of 480x480 (NTSC) and 480x576(PAL).
I'm focusing on PAL.
Is 480 horizontal resolution? Why every my divx has larger x than y, while SVCD has y > x?
Let's make an example: I've a DivX with 480x352 resolution.
To convert to SVCD I used AddBorders function, adding (576-352)/2 lines on the top and bottom.
So my movie should be 480x576. When I see it on my PC everything is ok, but when I play SVCD on DVD player images seems stretched... why?

SVCD-Resolution is also called 2/3-D1, because it has 2/3 of the DVD-Resolution. So 720/3*2=480.
DVD-Players will stretch the Picture to the right Aspect Ratio.

Compared to DivX, the biggest difference is that MPEG2 (1) Videos do have a fixed vertical Resolution. You can only use 288 or 576 Scanlines (PAL), because that's the true TV-Resolution. Using DivX, you can do (nearly) every Resolution (i recomend using a mod16-Resolution).

Let's see if I understood:
Fixed vertical res: 576. Aspect ratio: 4:3.
So 576/3*4 = 768 (horizontal res).
If my video was 480x352 (AR: 1.36). I've to add borders to have AR: 1.33. 480/1.33 = 360. I've to add 4 pixel on the top and bottom. Then I can resize to 480x576.

Nearly correct. SVCD is based on Full-D1. Full-D1 uses non-square Pixels with a PAR of 1.092:1. You get 720 non-square or 786(!) square Pixels. Resize your Video directly to 480x576, without any cropping or border-adding.

No, it really is 786x576.

720x576 = 786x576
704x576 = 768x576

720x576 is not 4:3! It really is 704x576 with an overscan of 16 Pixels.
