Ok i looked around... only found hacks that would allow you to watch all the channels (not interested since that is highly dubious and expensive investment AND direct tv changes things often enoughthat you may end up with a junk box on your hands or whatever..)

I wanted to know if ANYONE knew of a way or knows of information that a person could use to capture the digital stream directly into the computer. Without the decoding process. I imagine that the bitstream isnt really all the big, especially on normal direct TV, but this is only a guess. I can see the artifacting on some tv shows, still shots mostly, looks similar to divx or xvid in some ways. So there must be SOMEONE who has done this. Or is the decoding the problem, once you have the signal in your pretty hands?

And a second note...

Im not entirely sure id want to DO this at all.. probabaly really complex to set up, but I like to learn about stuff so the informaiton is what im after.

There is a company www.169time.com that does legal (I think) mods to your D* receiver so it can go out firewire to a DVHS deck or something.

I don't know if can go direct to a PC. And I have never seen one of these modded units.
