Upgrading XViD: access denied to xvid.dll

Ahem... I'm not exactly sure this is the correct section (or even forum!) to post such a question but...

I have a problem that happens when I try to upgrade xvid.dll : the system says xvid.dll is being used by another process, and even if I try deleting it from the DOS prompt I get the same 'Access denied' error.

SOMETIMES restarting my machine 'frees' the file and I have the opportunity to delete it and replace it with another version, but that's a problem since I usually need my PC to be up all the time and I don't like rebooting every time I test a new version.

Using Process Explorer by Sysinternals I noticed the xvid.dll is being used by Winlogon.exe itself, which is a system process and can't be shut down without screwing up the whole system (and then rebooting, of course :-) )

Isn't there an easy way to just 'close access' to a DLL? I'm using Windows XP Pro Sp1.

Try using "XP Smoker" (search google), and it's "unload dll's directly" option.
I don't know if this will help, but it might.
The other tweaks might bee of some use to you too :)

Try this.

Open task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and end task on explorer.exe

Now, open task manager again and "File/New/explorer.exe"


Not sure why Winlogon.exe is locking the xvid.dll though:confused:

The problem probably stands in having an explorer window with a .AVI(encoded with xvid) preview open.. close all explorer windows, try again, then if that didn't work, logout (not reboot) .. and login again, if that doesn't work .. your windows instalation might be fu%#$ up ;).. If you don't want to reinstall windows and only want xvid for encoding, then install fddshow and set it to decode xvid (although it does this automaticaly), then in the future your system will not lock xvid.dll anymore and u can reinstall it freely,

then again everything that i said might be wrong (i hope not)

Ok, you've Windows XP & Sp1..hmm..If your filesystem is NTFS, this could be handy:

Funny you shold mention that, happened to me yesterday too.
Stranger was that I closed the installer and retried and it went through the instalation normally :confused:
I'm 100% positive I hadn't any XVid file selected...

I've succedeed removing the old dll by rebooting & logging in as another user. By the way, winlogon seems to mantain a driver & codec cache for a LOOONG time - maybe te option 'Unload DLLs directly' which can be found in X-Setup as well could really help, I'll give it a try as soon as another version of xvid is available :-)

I badly need xvid for encoding as well (don't be fooled by the fact it's my first post, I've been lurking for a while and I encode since a lot of time :P )

Thank you for all your answers, now I'm going since I'm eager to test the new xvid version which seems to work very well. Will I find a better solution to this problem, it's sure I post it.

Not sure if winlogon.exe gave me issues or not, but killing explorer.exe and restarting it (via task manager) unlocked my xvid.ax file successfully (XP SP1).

(For more task manager fun, try killing your RPC service processes ;))
