View Full Version : Do stand alone divx players support other containers than avi?

I used the search button, but couldnt find it.

Are the players, like Kiss,Elta etc. capable of playing divx/xvid-ogg or -mkv files ?
Or perhaps can they learn it by a firmware update?

Or do we have to stick to AVI once again?:(

Thank you.

No, currently they support only avi's but why don't you buy dvd burner instead if you want to watch your movies with standalone...

Well, is this ridiculous or what?

None of the "real" standalones play other containers than avi at the moment but Xbmp in Xbox is said to be successful in opening any format imaginable with divx, xvid, real media video codecs in containers such as ogm, mkv, ra, mov, and mp4. Unfortunately the xbox choice is a rather tiresome option dealing with modifications and installments. Though I'd go Xbox way if it was sold in my country (Well, I mean sold legally and guarenteed).
Here is alink to what XBoxMediapLayer can do:

1) those players can handle mpg files as well.. both mpeg1 and mpeg2 without choosing any special form of packaging is supported. I had put VCD MPEG-1, SVCD MPEG-2 and XviD on the same CD and it worked like charm. But neither MP4, OGM nor Matroska are currently supported (that might change one day).

2) About the Xbox: It's extremely noisy when compared to a regular DVD player... many living room "owners" (usually meaning the female living in your household) will not allow such a noise source (please let's not start a debate why this makes or does not make any sense). Plus atm the xmp does not support ISO DVD±R/Ws larger than 2 GB so all my 6 movie DivX DVD-Rs would be useless.

Bottom line: currently there's no "ideal" player

Dear Doom9,
Bottom line: currently there's no "ideal" player

I happen to agree (after reading the discussion about divx certified issue, pheeew!...). Even my friends who own a pc can not easily view my movies if I do not show them the installation period. I do not despise them, it's hard to get a combination of a powerful pc, decent os, latest directx, the codec itself, a good software player, container plugin, subtitle plugin, xcd plugin, ability to update these every 3 months or so. I once even tried to build up their TV-out connections whenever I visited them.
And now? I know that if someone is not getting it by her/his own than s/he can never do. What they need is put in CD - press OK things, the solution that may never -seriously never- see the land in terms of mpeg4 codecs.
but why don't you buy dvd burner instead if you want to watch your movies with standalone...
You are most probably right Gaia.

An why not buy both, DivX on DVD, the most interesting part.

I didn't mean that you should burn your mpeg4 movies to DVD's. I ofcourse meant that forget XviD/DivX and start authoring DVD's. This way you don't need to care about limitations and can watch your movies with standalone player.

That way you end up going through about six times more writeable DVDs.

I use XBOX to watch most of my divx movie.

XBMP can play AVI, OGM, MKV very well (DivX, XviD, MPEG1-4, Windows Media, MP3, Vorbis, AC-3 and a lot more!) VobSub (sub/idx) and srt subtitles (ascii or unicode) are also supported.

XBOX v1.1-1.3 fan noise is really not the big issue anymore (these new revision did not have fan on the GPU like the first one)

and for the 2GB limitation I recommend steaming the video from your PC using simple Windows share. This is pretty useful feature, at least for me.

Kiss players support Ogg audio now so there is not much standing in the way of them implimenting the OGM container in a new firmware release.

1. otherwise there wouldn't be much sense suporting vorbis. since you can't use it in avi.

2. may i use vbr mp3 as soundtrack?

Well you could use it for audio instead of mp3. I mean most DVD players support mp3 simply for mp3 not for use in AVI's or whatever.

Vbr mp3 is supported and the majority of movies play fine, but there is a certain issue when there is not regular enough keyframes when the audio will become desynced. Kiss reccomends encoding video with at least 1 keyframe per 12 frames.
