View Full Version : Help on IVTC (interlaced/progressive frames)

Well you probably have read this problem often.. but I can't find anything usefull on the search :(
I need help on a anime, called "Read or Die", which has interlaced & progressive frames (stupid hybride)
Can any off the bigguys help me out... I've put a 45MB vob online, so you all can play with it:

Perfect IVTC is near impossible. You will most likely have to use some form of overrides for the IVTC process. I dont have the source to experiment with, but I would recommend trying the new Decomb beta 5 that neuron2 has been working on. Helped on my hybrid ZoE a great deal, but even then, overrides abound.
PS. Read the guides and help files that come with decomb and play with the settings.

LOL.. yeah I already tried the new decomb5b9.. but no good results and with overwriting I don't have a lot of experiece.. I tried it, but got no good results.... If just someone would like to look at it?

Just downloaded and looked at the flags in the D2V file. I never seen such a weird pattern :sly: Maybe the best is to use TomsMoComp or DGBob on it.

Hi-
It's not hybrid. Just the usual anime telecine job. It can be IVTC'd easily (the short clip you made available, anyway). Try some variation of this script:

It *is* a highly unusual VOB! I knew the 3->1 and 1->3 transitions in the D2V file were theoretically possible, but I'd never seen them. Think about the implications for the frame rate.
I am just now getting into this in detail. More to follow...

manono is right about it not being hybrid. But I disagree with him about enabling pattern guidance. There just isn't enough 0123 action in the D2V.
You can do this the simple way by using FORCE FILM and following it with:
fielddeinterlace(full=false,threshold=30)
or you can do a full IVTC with:
Telecide(order=1,post=2,vthresh=45)
Decimate(mode=2,threshold2=1.0)
I don't see any reason not to use the first method, if this clip is representative of the whole movie.

Thanks for the tips. Personally, I'd never Force Film something showing as 55% Film in DVD2AVI. You'd almost be guaranteed some kind of a screwup somewhere along the line. Probably in a panning scene where the result might play jerky or have some interlacing. Force Filming that clip results in at least 2 interlaced frames. As for Guide=1; I was assuming that it had started life as Film, and that it had been telecined, no matter how badly. Therefore I used Guide=1. That was my thinking anyway.
Think about the implications for the frame rate.
Do you mean that the base framerate might be something other than 24fps? That particular clip is mostly a mix of 8fps and 12fps, but there are 2 short sections that are 24fps. So the whole thing has to be treated as 24fps. I think.

When you have 3012 repeating, that gives 10 fields from 8, implying an original frame rate of 24fps (ignoring dups, it may be 12fps animated). But if you have repeating 3131, that gives 12 fields from 8, implying 20fps.
Assuming you are right about the 16fps content (dup'ed 8fps), maybe the encoders decided to use 3131 encoding for those sections to avoid having to transmit additional duplicates to bring the frame rate up to 30fps.
This discovery mandates a change to my DVD2AVI flags section of the IVTC tutorial.

I agree with manono, personally I'd never use Force Film that is less than 95% to advoid screwups. Here is a newbie question, can one always use IVTC for most of the NTSC hollywood types of movies, even it is showing something more than 95 percent in dvd2avi?

You shouldn't imagine "screwups" that are not there. I saw one or two combs in the entire clip with FORCE FILM, and they were easily dispatched by FD. It's a viable tradeoff of processing time in this case.

I am talking about general case, in this case I agree with you completely. Besides tradoff in processing time, is there a disadvantage of using IVTC over force film?

If the D2V is pure 3:2 pull down (repeating 0123 pattern), then FORCE FILM will give a perfect result. IVTC after NON FORCE FILM can generate some mismatches.
Several of my DVDs are pure 3:2, and I always use FORCE FILM for them.
