View Full Version : Why would anyone choose SVCD to encode?

All SVCD encodes I have seen are dramatically inferrior to Xvid or Divx, in both video and audio quality and are approximately the same file size.
I have been struggling to understand why anyone (who isn't legally blind or almost deaf) would encode DVD quality movies in SVCD.
Am I just playing these things back incorrectly (I use Power DVD on my PC)?

Try to playback your Divx on your standalone and youŽll get your answer.

svcd (after vcd) is the lowest common denominator.
not many standalones can play divxvid.
you're not meant to play (s)vcd, xvid, divx, or even dvd back on your pc, it'll always look less blocky on the tv.

I see. It was a silly question after all.
My "standalone" is an old PC with a $150 ATI video card which allows home theatre playback nicely for any format.
I thought I was doing something wrong. I guess SVCD really is lower quality than Xvid or Divx

hehe :) My question is 'Why would anyone want to encode to Divx'? No need to answer, I've just always had that question for all the Divx/Xvid fans out there. I wouldn't want to watch a movie on my PC or 'TV outed' to my TV set, but I guess you see now how everyone has there own reasons of doing what they do.
