output darker than input?

can anyone enlighten me why i get darker output?
using default xvid settings in vdub154 with no filters
its either darker or colors are more saturated
i'm just curious if its normal behaviour

I've noticed this too since the old Divx3
anyway i think its the result of mpeg4 encoding the colors degradate a little.

if there's a way to avoid this,---> COOL!!!!

I haven't seen this problem before, maybe my eyes are just used to it.

However here is an idea to prevent this.

You could have your avisynth script brighten your source before you encode it, try Tweak (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Tweak) or Levels (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Levels) to alter your source so that the colors look better after compression.

What program do you guys use to display the input source? Many software dvdplayers use non-neutral gamma and brightness settings. I fell to this trap too, a short while ago. Find it here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55817).

the source is uncompressed avi
i compared both in mplayerc, vdub and mplayer6.4
of course the first thing i checked was if there are any filters loaded and then drivers

Sounds a bit like the effect I saw after installing a GeForce the first time. Their default settings for brightness in the overlay controlls were far from satisfactory - had to increase them up to 140%. Maybe that's the effect you're realizing? Try to watch one of those movies on a different computer.

but that would affect both movies, no?
if i change brightness in overlay controls, it changes the brightness for both movies by same amount (obviously :)), so they are still at different levels
