Just a few words about the (hopefully) upcoming menuing feature with Matroska.

Such a capability would be great in order to create DVD backups retaining the original artwork of the DVD menu. But now that I think of it, it could mean a lot of work to transfer all the menu information in the DVD to the Matroska file by hand.

Let's face it. We all have busy lifes, and such a task would be a pain in the ass unless you were a menu artist willing to spend hours and hours in creating a beautiful peace of art. Thus: a tool capable to automate (to a big extent, yet not completely) this transfer would be wanted.

It is my advice to those Matroska developers working on menuing, that they shape it having DVD backups in mind. Transferring the DVD menu to the mkv file should be as direct and easy as possible, so that it won't be long before somebody come up with the aforementioned automation tool.

I dont think it will be helpful to simply copy the DVD menue, as all the stuff the menue is pointing to ( director's comment, making of, trailers, etc, ) are not to be found in a usual DVD backup ;) ....

Will it possible to replicate the menu from DVD in Matroska (eg being able to highlight onscreen options with mouse) or will it be more like say VCD menu.....keystrokes for menus/chapters?

Or it it to early to say?

it would be cool to be able to replicate the dvd menu and just take out options that you don't need, or let them be there and just not work.

Bren, the reason we didnt specify this yet is because it shall be a powerful system, but with a kind of fallback system so that even hardware players can support the main functionality fine ...

would be great if the dvd menu could be "visualy" copied but with a very small file size so it could be even used on a 1cd rip...

i hope these menu will not take to much cpu use. i have test smil menu, mp4 menu and in all case this resulte in a spike of cpu use (because there is overlay, and transparency params i suppose) and this was very anoying for a menu to freewe your system :)

Bye.

@ChristianHJW

Of course I am thinking of an automation tool that will provide the user with easy solutions for those menu options that won't have any utility (or that maybe will have, if I decide to backup to 2 DVD+-Rs). A visual tool (as Bond says) would be of course the way to go.

So ChristianHJW, is there any specification already regarding menuing in Matroska? If tere's none, when do yuo plan to start with it (more or less)? :D
