yellow bars on left hand side...

Howdy All,

Bit of a strange problem. I have had a few encodes lately result in a successful avi, but there is this yellow bar of maybe 5 pixels down the left hand side. I have seen this in 2 projects over the past week. One a 25fps progressive PAL stream. The other a 29fps NTSC.

I am thinking that it is some kind of inconsistency with my system. I have installed DivX5.02 and AviSynth2.5 but everything else is pretty much well manually entered (avisynth plugins mainly). Machine is a WinXP box.

I have a second machine with a pretty much identical configuration which has never displayed this problem. The only thing I can imagine is that it may have something to do with my installation of DivX5.05 which was subsequently uninstalled to downgrade to 5.02. could of their been some drivers/system stuff left over from 5.05?

The problem is transitory. Today an encode produced the yellow bar that an almost identically configured encode yesterday produced did not (the only change being one of bitrate)...

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Can you post the pixel size of your source and the pixel size of your encode please?

Input is 720x576. The movie is "Apocalypse Now", widescreen or letterboxed or whatever you want to call it with a 2:1 ratio... encoded to 640:320. PAL 25fps

I have had the same problem with "Conan the Barbarian" which was NTSC 29fps 16:9, don't have the vobs on the HD at the moment but am pretty sure it was also 720x576, encoded to 640x272..

I had this kind of problem once. The reason for the problem was the resize-method I used. I don't remember exatly what was the resizer but I think it was SimpleResize. Try using different resizer if you don't find any better solution for your problem.

Siku may have a point.

Some time a go I had a similar problem myself. However I remember my solution was more drastic. As I was forced to format my PC and start again (death caused by old codecs and filters).

I also have to admit that I don't resize my encodes anymore either, well not in width anyway. And not since I started viewing them on my 16:9 PAL progressive TV/monitor - Thank you Mr tax rebate!

If the DVD source has 720 horizontal pixels (which they all do) then that's what I encode.

I found the solution was to remove divX entirely.. Did a uninstall, then ran through the registry removing any leftovers. Reinstalled DivX5.02 and hey presto problem solved...

I'm glad you have the patience wait, for the possible reason why DivX was'nt working. Then do the necessary and then delete all the registy markers.

I'm afraid I don't, which is why I now have a multi boot system.
One boot for general use M$ office, Nero etc. One boot for editing media. One boot for DivX, WM & QuickTime. And one boot for RealMedia (Helix, Elecard, ac3 etc).

3 months and counting......... no problems!

I have a dual boot myself, but a WinXP/Debian Linux setup. I keep telling myself that I should figure out how to do all my encoding on the linux side of things, but it is just so easy under M$.

Working in the IT industry, I have absolutely no fear when it comes to registry hacking. Have killed many a system with "lets see what this does..." . Constantly amazes me how uninstalling software leaves so much left over. Though why and how DivX 5.05 should effect DivX5.02 in this manner is beyond me. The bits of the registry I removed did not seem to hold all that great amount of config type data. Just one of those M$ things I guess...
