Hi all,
Since my latest reinstall with XP and all the latest programs and codecs I am using, I'm experiencing problems with my Divx rips.
I have seen problems with the synch of sound in combination with vobsub. If I would turn of the subs there would be no problem.
Later (after another reinstall) I have seen problems with sound synch, even without subs turned on.
I understand that you would like to have some details on my hardware or perhaps even software, i will already give some below. If you need more, please let me know.
PIII 600MHz
512MB RAM
Winxp pro sp1
gordian knot 0.28
vobsub 2.23
thx

hi and welcome to the forum,
actually i can only guess, but i think that this is caused by your rather low cpu speed. so if you are playing high bitrate, high resolution movies, perhaps even with ac3 sound and then also display subs it might just be too much for you 600 MHz.
but to be sure, please verify by creating a low quality clip that should run on your computer smoothely. in addition features like bframes etc tend to need more processing power too!
perhaps you can also specifiy the specs of a few encodes that do not run smoothely. if you do not know the encoding settings anymore gspot might come in handy to tell you all the information you need!
hope this helps

Hi Steve,
Thanx for the quick reply. The strange thing is that I have been reading many of the guides at Doom9 before I started ripping.
I have made several rips with 2 audio tracks and subs without problems. These rips have been made on 2 cd's so i believe the movies were around 1000kbs. Also some extras were added on the cds.
i was thinking that the problem may have occured through the new divx 5.05 codec. Perhaps more advanced settings?

Hi-
As killingspree said, your hardware is kind of borderline for decoding high quality rips, especially with subs and perhaps AC3 audio involved. Although I hate to recommend it, you might try burning the subs into the video, to save the CPU from having to display them at the same time. In addition, you might try ffdshow (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe) for decoding your videos (if you're not already), as it's less CPU intensive. And you might try a less CPU intensive player, such as the BS Player (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Players/bsplay086.496.exe).
You said that they played well before the OS reinstall, so perhaps you have something else going on in the background that's slowing you down. So maybe do a Control-Alt-Delete and knock off anything else going on. And do a Start-Run-msconfig-Startup and uncheck anything from loading at startup that you don't absolutely need.
Edit: You also have to tweak XP to get rid of all the crap you don't need. Foremost among all the junk you don't need is many of the services. So try here (http://www.deviantforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1926) or especially here (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/xpprofiles.htm) for guides to turning off unneeded services. And try here (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,,5155,00.asp) for otherwise optimizing XP.
